The International Association of Indigenous Aging (IA2) is pleased to share info about a webinar series on the social determinants of health and their impact on cancer risk among American Indian and Alaska Native communities. The first in a 3-part series is next Tuesday Feb. 22 at 2:00pm ET.

Panelists and respondents include:
  • Stephanie Melkonian, PhD, Epidemiologist, Division of Cancer Prevention and Control’s Epidemiology and Applied Research Branch, CDC
  • Melissa Buffalo, MS (Meskwaki and Dakota), Chief Executive Officer, American Indian Cancer Foundation
  • Linda Burhansstipanov, Dr.PH, MSPH (Cherokee Nation), Director, Native American Cancer Research Corporation
  • Kevin Pottie MD, MCISc, CCFP, FCFP, Ian McWhinney Research Chair in Family Medicine, Western University; Cochrane Equity Methods Group
IA2’s President, Bill Benson, has been working with the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) as part of a cooperative agreement with the Center's for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for the last four years.

Dr. Jolie Crowder joined the project team two years ago and has since worked closely to support the American Indian and Alaska Native project workgroup, led by Dr. Stephanie Melkonian with the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control. Dr. Crowder was instrumental in the design and implementation of a systematic review and evidence map of social determinants of cancer (publication co-authored with CDC staff forthcoming). Preliminary findings from this review, which included nearly 300 prevention-focused research articles inclusive of American Indian and Alaska Native populations, will be shared by Dr. Stephanie Melkonian.

Benson, Crowder, and Jamie Ishcomer-Aazami, in collaboration with Leslie Best of NACDD, have worked to convene a spectacular group of expert respondents who will share their perspectives on the review findings in a discussion moderated by Benson.

This is one of three webinars to be offered this Spring. Additional webinar topics include:
  • Social Determinants of Health and Historical Trauma – The Impact on American Indians and Alaska Natives
  • Indigenous Evaluation Frameworks and Community Engaged Approaches for Working with American Indian and Alaska Native Communities.

The International Association for Indigenous Aging (IA2) is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of American Indians, Alaska Natives, and other Native people as they move through the aging spectrum.

Our work helps people and programs figure out how to competently and effectively engage and serve Native communities. We attempt to advance both knowledge and practice and promote engagement at all levels– local, tribal, regional, and national.

Fundamentally, our work acknowledges the history, rights, cultures, and values of indigenous people throughout their lifespans, recognition of tribal sovereignty, and centering the work of  Native communities in meaningful partnerships.
