Stay home. Stay vigilant. Don’t discriminate.
As the number of Covid cases increases rapidly, we urge everyone to stay home as much as possible, practice good hygiene, observe social distancing, and stay vigilant. However, many ethnic minorities are employed in industries that do not allow them to work from home and they are at great risk of infection. Race and ethnicity are not related to contracting the virus. Please don’t let the bigoted media reporting enhance racial bias.

Public Education Workshops

In January, Unison conducted 3 public education workshops for teachers in Ho Yu College and Primary School, students in HKU Faculty of Education, and students from VTC Youth College  respectively. The participants were very responsive and reflected that they were inspired by the sharing of our scholarship awardees. The teachers find the cultural sensitivity training motivating and uplifting whereby they acquired tips to improve home school cooperation with ethnic minority parents.

Disability and Barriers to Inclusive Education Forum

Unison was invited as a panelist at the Disability and Barriers to Inclusive Education Forum organised by the Equal Opportunity Unit at HKU and Musubi on 22 January.  We discussed the lack of support for ethnic minority children with special education needs (SEN) in mainstream schools, the difficulties of ethnic minority parents with SEN children in choosing schools, as well as misdiagnosis and overdiagnosis of SEN ethnic minority children.

Begin from Listening: Conference for Hong Kong Children and Teenagers Pre-meeting

Unison gathered some youth ambassadors from the ethnic minority community to participate in Begin from Listening: Conference for Hong Kong Children and Teenagers, organised by Save The Children and Hong Kong Children’s Rights Committee. In January, the first briefing was held with the youth ambassadors to prepare them for the Conference. Together they brainstormed ideas and shared their thoughts on various issues affecting youth, such as the education system and mental health.

ELEVATE workshops

Unison is grateful to our training partners from Ernst & Young (EY) for conducting workshops on the career exploration programme for S4-S5 ethnic minority youth. The workshops will teach the students future-ready skills that they can use in academic or professional settings. ELEVATE is a one-on-one programme for S4-S5 ethnic minority youth on individual life coaching and career exploration.
