Needham Public Schools to Drop Mask Mandate March 7th, Create Mask-Friendly Learning Environments
In a letter sent to families Tuesday this week, Needham Public Schools Superintendent Dan Gutekanst said the Needham Public Schools will implement a mask friendly learning environment for all K-12 students and staff effective Monday, March 7th. The Joint Committee on Health and Safety, which has advised the Superintendent on how to operate the schools in safe and healthy way during the pandemic, has also recommended that for the time being Preschool staff and students remain masked.
The Superintendent’s decision follows the state’s annnouncement last week that it will lift the statewide in-school mask mandate effective Monday, February 28th. Given the likelihood of family travel over the upcoming break and possible increased risk of exposure, the mask mandate in Needham schools will be lifted the following week. Families are encouraged to engage in conversations with their children to determine their mask preferences. School staff will use the week after February vacation to share plans and expectations with students.
State Department of Public Health Revises Mask Guidance
The state Department of Public Health (DPH) on Tuesday revised its recommendation on indoor masking in public places, advising that it is only necessary for certain groups of people, including those at risk because they are more vulnerable to COVID-19.
DPH now advises that fully vaccinated people should wear a mask or face covering when indoors (and not in your own home) if you have a weakened immune system, if you are at increased risk for severe disease because of your age or an underlying medical condition, or if someone in your household has a weakened immune system and is at increased risk for severe disease or is unvaccinated. Masks are still required in health care facilities and on public transportation.
Masks are still recommended for unvaccinated individuals.
