Welcome to the Some Things newsletter curated by designer & artist Ngaio Parr

Mostly spent this week wondering why American's don't have double cream / clotted cream at the grocer. Why limit the potential for happiness like that?

READ

I've started logging my reads this year for the first time (more to know how much I read rather than to log a certain amount of books read) — I can see both sides of the coin. Perhaps this is a better alternative?

The aforementioned Goodreads profile is proof I've entirely succumbed to Fantasy novels (even though this is real) — and am devouring the Crescent City sequel this week. Also — this set of essays on The Nineties already making me feel very seen.

Ancient Polychromy: "the idea that the ancients disdained bright colour is the most common misconception about Western aesthetics in the history of Western art."

I've started saving The Daily Good as a reward after completing the biggest task on my to-do list. Simple links for being kinder/better/good-er-er.

Books that made me think differently.

Bimbo Summit: “It’s pretty simple, we want to feel hot, even full of ourselves. It’s the kind of energy we need.”

Those of us who love books learn as much as we can and pass that accumulated wisdom along to students who mostly do not give a shit. ’Twas ever thus. But along the way, we create a chain of language lovers and nosy parkers that links us.

This book belongs to the Rev. Reid Byers, who still hopes to read it before he expires.

LOOK & LISTEN

A playlist for when you are angry at men but also want cute melodies.

I know this is now just a Bandsplain fan account now, but the Nine Inch Nails episode has me wanting to dye my hair black and wear leather again.

Seven Psychopaths is a goodie (like everything with Sam Rockwell). Bonus points for walking the Hollywood Reservoir afterward to recreate out the opening scene.

Same but different: people sitting in front of portraits of themselves, and stills from I Am Love in front of the location it was shot in Villa Necchi Campiglio, Milan.

This week in grief: a reminder that Nick Cave is the most eloquent of them all.

This room, this tablecloth, this whole situation.

New favourite phrase: Negative Ghost-rider (Also).

DO, BUY, & EAT

This mug would make my day 23% better before it even hits 8am.

Try out this hue test to discover your colour acuity (my ego will only let me link this because I got the best score).

You can't afford it Ngaio, don't visit it Ngaio.

This really is the best salad dressing that exists. The original recipe adds it to butter lettuce, sliced tomato and red onion (and that rules)— but it is really just good on anything.

This perfect sun hat is sitting in my storage unit in Australia and I miss it.

Highly recommended: have one of your best women come to stay with you in your new city and go to a heap of places you typically wouldn't due to laziness but love nonetheless: Chez Jay, El Cholo, The Last Bookstore, Canter's, The Donut Man, and a real-life cinema.
