2022 "FREE SEEDLING
GIVE-AWAY PROGRAM"

The first week of May, 6000 seedlings were handed out during our Annual "FREE Seedling Give-Away Program." The selection of seedlings for this year included white cedar, Norway spruce, black walnut, white birch, red pine, white pine, red maple, silver maple, red oak and white oak.

PRWIN set up a seedling pick up location with a local landowner for the drive by/pick up. This provided a wide open area to hand out the custom orders. Participants from Huron Kinloss and surrounding area placed personalized seedling orders with a maximum of 100 seedlings per participant.

Donations and sponsorships from B.M. Ross & Associates, Baywood Interiors Millwork, Community Foundation Grey Bruce, Enbridge, Greenfield Global, K2 Wind, OPG, Trillium Mutual Insurance and NWMO supported our seedling program. Thank you to those participants that also donated money to our organization! Special thank you to our directors Bill Steele, Murray Jamieson, Murray Yungblut and Mel Moulton along with PRWIN volunteers Jim and Christine Roberts for helping PRWIN handout the personal orders.

4H VOLUNTEER TREE PLANTING DAY

Saturday, May 7th, proved to be a beautiful day for the Ripley 4H Conservation Club to plant tree seedlings.The Ripley 4H Conservation Club and PRWIN worked together, planting trees on a landowner’s property in Huron Kinloss. The 4H Volunteer Tree Planting Day hand planted 2000 white cedars with a mix of Norway spruce.

On hand to do the heavy-lifting, were PRWIN Directors David Grant, Murray Jamieson, Don Farrell, Mel Moulton, Tory Colling and PRWIN volunteer Conor Dixon. PRWIN would like to thank 4H Club Leaders Jen Middelkamp, Emily Neitzel and their 4H members and volunteers for joining us this planting season.

To wrap up the morning planting session, PRWIN welcomed everyone to a BBQ. Special thank you to Miller Insurance Broker - Kincardine for sponsoring our BBQ and to PRWIN Director Cathy Farrell for feeding our hard working crew!

PRWIN 2022 SEEDLING ORDERS

PRWIN Directors and volunteers sorted and packaged over 80 personal seedling orders for our "FREE Seedling Give-Away Program." Seedlings were purchased from Maitland Valley Conservation Authority and Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority.

Thank you to our tireless and energetic directors David Grant, Bill Smith, Bill Steele, Murray Jamieson, Murray Yungblut, Bernd Portz, Gib McIIwarth and Don Farrell along with volunteers Gail Jamieson, Mike Walsh and Jim & Christine Roberts for assisting us with our community program.

2022 REFORESTATION PLANTING PROJECTS

This spring, project seedlings were planted at reforestation sites in Huron Kinloss. Our project seedlings included a variety of red and white oak, white cedar, red maple and Norway spruce.

PRWIN Directors David Grant, Murray Jamieson, Don Farrell, Bill Smith and PRWIN volunteers Conor Dixon and Jim Roberts had a great stretch of warm, sunny weather to complete our project sites.

RED MAPLES IN HURON TOWNSHIP

A few weeks ago, we completed a red maple reforestation project that PRWIN developed in 2021. The red maple reforestation site in Huron Township offers red maple seedlings and a small mixture of white spruce. The location is a small area of retired cash crop land that is near a river bank.

Thank you to our PRWIN Directors David Grant, Murray Jamieson, Don Farrell, Bill Smith and PRWIN volunteer Jim Roberts for their time to complete the red maple planting and to help tidy up the red maple site. Special thank you to Maitlland Valley Conservation Authority for the seedlings.

VOLUNTEER TREE PLANTING EVENT AT BOILER BEACH

On Saturday, April 30th, PRWIN Director Mel Moulton volunteered at the Lake Huron Coastal Centre - Volunteer Tree Planting Event at Boiler Beach. Lake Huron Coastal Centre planted nearly 1000 trees along the shoreline of Lake Huron with many community groups and volunteers. Planting native trees will help to protect the shoreline from damage and erosion from the wind and strong waves.

PRWIN Chairperson, David Grant attended the Boiler Beach Restoration Project Webinars that Lake Huron Coastal Centre hosted online. The webinars highlighted the priority areas for shoreline restoration along Boiler Beach Road, the types of shrubs and trees that are available to plant, and the correct methods for planting native grasses, shrubs and trees.

This tree planting event was apart of the restoration work the Lake Huron Coastal Centre carries out each year through the Green Ribbon Champion Program.

ENJOY NATURE AT THE
MCLARTY CENTRE

We have a new visitor at the McLarty Environmental Study Area! The beaver has a well constructed dam situated near our Osprey nest.

The McLarty Environmental Study Area is located on Bruce Road 6/Side Road 20 in Huron Kinloss. It is open to the public to enjoy the great outdoors!

In 2013, Dr. McLarty and family donated fourteen acres of Pine River Flats from their farm to the Pine River Watershed Initiative Network for the creation of the McLarty Environmental Study Area. This area is designed for our community to learn about the Pine River; wetland creation; and the education of the local wildlife and plants that this area supports. It remains the desire of the McLarty’s to preserve this piece of the river flats for generations to come.

PRWIN has installed a gravel trail system throughout the area, created two wetland ponds, planted memorial trees, an osprey nest and planted over a thousand tree seedlings. Community groups have enjoyed outdoor classroom experiences at the McLarty location. The 4H Conservation Club will be helping us with our "Clean Up Day" at the McLarty Centre. Also, the Ripley Horticultural Society - For Our Youth will be stopping by to enjoy nature along the river flats. Local youth and groups are welcome to experience this opportunity!

Our committee greatly appreciates community sponsorship and funding opportunities to continue our Annual Seedling Program and tree projects in the Pine River Watershed.
Funding allows PRWIN to keep our tree programs alive and to support the goals of PRWIN and our Lake Huron Shoreline.
