18 FEB: NORTH SYDNEY SPEAKS OUT, KYLEA IN THE NEWS, THIS WEEK'S EVENTS & MORE

CAMPAIGN UPDATE: WEEK 22

I’ve been on the edge of my seat all week, watching results come in from the Willoughby by-election. With nearly 1 in 5 former Liberal supporters now swinging towards Independent Larissa Penn, the state government has been dealt a clear message: We, the community, will no longer be ignored.

Saturday’s outcome was a huge vote of no confidence for the Northern Beaches and Western Harbour Tunnels. From the outset, these projects have been yet another example of short-term thinking – using infrastructure approaches from the 1960s to plan for tomorrow. Frustratingly, North Sydney will pay the price with more traffic congestion on our streets, more air pollution around our schools and the loss of 15,000 sqm of green space from our parks and reserves.

Our community has spoken out at state level, and I am grateful that our democracy has given us the opportunity to be heard. But I also know there is much more work to be done to ensure that government decisions are made with transparency, community consultation, sustainability and integrity at their core - and that our views are reflected at all levels of government.

I hope you'll join me on Zoom this Wednesday for an expert panel discussion on political integrity, and in person on Sunday for our official Campaign Launch! North Sydney, it's our time - let's be the change we want to see.

Why do you want to change the climate in Canberra? I can't help but feel we're being taken for granted because we've been a safe LNP seat where the incumbent doesn't represent the values of the community. To me, Kylea represents hope that we can have someone in Canberra who puts people over power grabs and party political ideology.

What's your favourite thing to do in our electorate of North Sydney? I'm part of a close community and often get together with neighbours for coffee, a drink or some painting. I love living here as I don't have a car and can walk pretty much everywhere. We are so lucky to have easy access to harbour parks, lovely local cafes, and fantastic markets.

KYLEA TINK NEXT GENERATION

New KT Next Gen members joined our meeting this week and are already contributing fresh ideas and perspectives on some of the issues facing our generation. We discussed the action that nurses took to draw attention to their working conditions – there’s a lot of pressure on young people to study and train to be nurses to meet the growing demand for skills, when the industry they’re going into isn’t getting the support it needs.

In other news, members of KT Next Gen are getting some great leadership opportunities in the campaign. We will be participating in the launch event of Kylea’s campaign this Sunday in Lane Cove and will be sending some proud faces to march in the Mardi Gras Parade!

If you or someone you know is young and looking for a way to channel their passion for our generation’s future, please put them in contact with us. We’re really proud of our group so far and are keen to keep growing!

NORTH SYDNEY'S INDEPENDENT

There are many factors that could have contributed to Larissa Penn's success in Willoughby - and a success it clearly is whether or not she takes the seat! In three short weeks, Willoughby rallied behind a local whose name and face were well known due to years of speaking up on the Beaches Link - someone whose campaign, in her own words, was "not very sophisticated", but who they knew they could trust to speak up for the community.

As election analyst "Yoda" Antony Green said of Willoughby: "This is the result with Federal election implications". There is a saying that says a river begins with only one drop of water. The voices rising from our community and from communities across Australia are like a drops joining together to create an unstoppable current of change (that's all of us!). Election Countdown - 12 weeks until the middle of May.
