Ireland Reads is a campaign to get the whole country reading this month in the lead up to a national day of reading on Friday 25 February.
#SqueezeInARead is a public libraries' initiative, in partnership with Healthy Ireland, publishers, booksellers, authors and others, and aims to celebrate reading and all the benefits it can have for well-being and enjoyment.
You can get involved by pledging to ‘squeeze in a read’ on Friday 25 February. You can pledge one minute, one hour, or more; it doesn't matter what you read or how long you read for.
If you are looking for reading inspiration, you can visit the Staff Picks area on our website to see what our staff have been reading, or visit the Ireland Reads website for reading tips.

Whale Tales is a new piece of music by leading Irish composer Ian Wilson for violin, cello and piano (for the Degani Trio) inspired by different stories about whales, as a way of reminding us how wonderful these creatures are.
A short introduction is followed by four main movements – ‘Jonah’; ‘The Whale’s Tail’ (after the area on the dwarf planet Pluto with the same name); ‘Sleep’ (inspired by how whales sleep – vertically!); and ‘The White Whale’, after Herman Melville’s famous novel. The inclusion of live-drawing by the wonderful children’s artist Kim Sharkey will make the experience completely engaging for a family audience.
Whale Tales is funded by the Arts Council of Ireland/An Chomhairle Ealaíon.

A World of Difference: Challenging Prejudice and Celebrating Diversity
|
|
|
Creative writing is a powerful weapon against prejudice. Stories, and songs, poems and plays help us step into other people’s shoes and see the world from different viewpoints.
Congratulations to all the children who took part in this project with Debbie Thomas. Debbie is the author of Dead Hairy, Jungle Tangle, Monkie Business, Class Act and My Secret Dragon, and Debbie has run creative writing and story workshops in all sorts of places, from schools and libraries to hospitals and direct provision centres.
We are delighted to present a series of 6 booklets, one from each of the schools who participated in this project: All Saints (Blackrock), Monkstown Educate Together, Oliver Plunkett School (Monkstown), Our Lady of Mercy (Booterstown), St. Joseph’s National School (Tivoli Road) and St. Nicholas Montessori (Dún Laoghaire).
The booklets will be launched by An Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Lettie McCarthy on Wednesday 16 February.
Supported by the Creative Ireland programme.

Stirring Memories: Stories of Yesterday
Level 3, dlr LexIcon
23 February - 30 April
This exhibition will be launched by an Cathaoirleach Cllr. Lettie McCarthy on
Thurs 24 February 2022 at 2.30pm.
All welcome.
What was life like in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown over the years?
Storyteller Helena Byrne posed this question to members of local day care centres. Enjoy these stirring memories of trips to the Baths on sunny days, shopping in the much-loved local shops of the past such as Lee’s and getting dressed up for a Saturday night out in the Top Hat!
Comprising audio and written stories, this heartwarming exhibition is the culmination of a social history project to collect and preserve stories and recollections of times gone by in the County.
An online version of the exhibition will be available to view on our website in the coming weeks.
This is a joint project by dlr Libraries & dlr Age-Friendly Programme, and supported by the Creativity in Older Age Fund, part of the Creative Ireland Programme.
