This year promises to be another amazing event. Our virtual, all day, interactive Institute is geared for master teachers, directors, trainers, teacher educators, and anyone responsible for supporting preschool teachers.



Grants

APPLY by Feb 28th - first grant deadline for your best chance to get a full registration for free.

After that date, we will accept applications on a rolling basis, until all spots are filled.

Spinning Shapes

 

Spinning Shapes

How  do you know?


Is a square a square no matter which way it spins? Yes! It does not suddenly become a diamond. 

How do we know? Because 2-dimensional shapes are defined by their attributes, like 4 straight sides, all connected at 4 corners (all right angles), all 4 sides the same length.


Activity
Cut out squares.
Poke a hole in the middle.
Attach square to a paper plate with a clasp or pipe cleaner.
Encourage children to ask each other if the square is still a square when it spins around.
How do they know?
Document children's thoughts and explanations along the way to check if their reasoning and understanding of 2-dimenstional shapes has changed.

 

Guess What?

Did you know that a square is actually ALSO a rectangle? Whaaaaat??!

A rectangle is a quadrilateral. It has 4 straight sides, all connected at 4 corners (all right angles), opposite sides parallel. Another definition is a two-dimensional, closed, four-sided figure with four right angles.

Using the attributes above can you (or your kiddoes) figure out why?
