The Architecture of Purcell, Feick, and Elmslie in Bismarck

North Dakota History, Vol. 81.3, Fall 2016

The Minneapolis-based and Chicago-trained partnership of Purcell, Feick, and Elmslie drafted designs for ten buildings in North Dakota from 1908 to 1916. Three were commercial and seven were residential. Only four survive in Bismarck. But, they illustrate the establishment of the architectural firm's presence in North Dakota, assisted by a group of Progressive community leaders.

Marking Women's History Month in the Archives

What better way to celebrate Women’s History Month than exploring the State Archives’ collections on prominent women with North Dakota connections. Records of journalists, pioneer settlers, trailblazers in the political history of the state, and woman's organizations are some of the records found in the collections. One of these women is Era Bell Thompson (pictured above), who grew up in Driscoll and later became an editor at Ebony magazine. The State Archives is a great resource for researching women’s history.
