Principal's Update

Dear Parents, Carers and Members of our College Community,

We have now completed our parent information evenings through TEAMs LIVE Events. This has not been the same as being able to meet with you and get to know you a little, or to be able to answer all your questions personally. I hope that we will be able to do this soon, but until then, please remember that you can always make contact with your child’s subject or pastoral teacher at any time. An email or a phone call can sometimes be all that is needed to sort out a situation or make a young person feel more comfortable in class and at school.

I want to spend a little time in this update to give you some information about ways to assist your child at home. This is not always easy, and most students are quite unique in the amount of assistance they require with either their work or their motivation or their organisation.

For younger students, the best place to complete homework is at the kitchen table. Even though they may have a desk or study space in their bedroom, most families lead very busy lives and being able to assist your child while completing the other tasks in the evening is always a bonus.  Students in Year 7 and 8 might find the transition to secondary school challenging and knowing that you are involved with the work being completed as homework helps them make the transition. Your child might ask your ideas about a topic, might read some work out to you to see how it sounds, might share a mathematical problem with you to see if you are as smart as they are or might just like having you close by to keep them on track and on task. Distractions like mobile devices and the television are not helpful, but remember that mobile phone is in fact a small hard drive they carry around every day and can be very handy to check facts and spelling or settle arguments – Siri is always keen to give an answer!

As students progress through the year levels, they will need a place where they can give sustained focused attention to their work, and a study timetable, which they stick to and which allows them to have time for study, their part-time job and their interests, plus time spent with friends. In the latter years of secondary school, your assistance is probably more around making sure your child is getting proper food and enough sleep, plus keeping up with the demands of school—homework, assignments and study for exams or time spent at their school-based apprenticeship or traineeship. It can be difficult to manage everything, but keeping track of everything on a notice board or in a digital diary can make it easier and achievable.

Every youngster is different. Some cruise through school with few problems, while others need all our pooled resources to get to the end of Year 12, but are very proud of themselves when they do. As a College, we will do everything in our power to meet the needs of your child, in every class, every day and we hope to work closely with you, whatever pathway your child is on, to do their very best, while enjoying life along the way.  We do our best work together, when we really know our learners, your children...our shared responsibility.

God Bless You,

Martina Millard

Deputy Principal's Update

During the Christmas/New Year holidays, works were carried out to extend the drop and go zone in the College carpark, creating an additional eight spaces. The new area is circled in the photo above.
These spaces are marked ‘Pick Up and Drop Off Zone’ and are not for car parking.

During peak times, please queue through the newly sealed student car park (photo below) until a space becomes available in either of the drop-off/pick-up zones.

Please do NOT queue in front of the building site entrance (near the first roundabout—not pictured) as this will block truck movements.

Thank you for your cooperation,

Geoff Browne
Deputy Principal

Assistant Principal Religious Education Update

May we all go safely into the term together next week and may our ever-present God protect each and every one of us. All classes paused for fifteen minutes on Monday last as we listened to a reading of  National Apology to the Stolen Generations. This year is the fourteenth anniversary of this significant event in Australia’s history. Thank you to Mr Simon Rezo for reading the Apology, to Ms Deanne Seigle -Buyatt for the introduction and Marymount Mob student Windsor Hill for the Acknowledgement of Traditional Owners

Year 11 & 12 Retreats

As with so many people at this challenging time, here at school we adjust, alter, bend and flex to have as normal routines as possible. Amongst the postponements which had to happen was the Year 12 Retreat. This would have taken place in Week 2. A new date has not been made as we await government decisions that affect us. We look forward to being able to do this soon. Year 11 Retreat is still on the calendar for 26-28 May.

Year 10 Reflection Day

The Year 10 Reflection Day can go ahead as it does not involve an overnight stay. This will be held on 9 March at Bond University. This is always a most enjoyable, refreshing and worthwhile day for the students. Facilitated by Michael Fitzpatrick, this day provides them with a chance to reflect on where they are at in their lives right now, in their relationship with themselves, their families, their friends and with God. A parent message regarding the day will be sent in the coming week.

Lent

Lent is just around the corner and this means that we start to consider what this means for us. What will each of us do for Lent? Project Compassion challenges us to ask ourselves  “What will I give up for Lent?” For many, it’s about not eating or drinking something they really like and the exercise of abstaining is good for the body and soul and can save a lot of money. Perhaps some of the money saved through abstaining can find its way to the Project Compassion Box.

Each PC class will have its own Project Compassion box and students and staff are encouraged to donate at least $1 per week. With all kinds of fundraising activities also going on through this time, we hope to be able to send Caritas a healthy cheque from the College Community.

Ash Wednesday

Fr Jack will conduct an Ashes Preparation Ritual on 28 February where last year’s palms will be burnt for the Parish Ash Wednesday  Mass. A small group of students from the College and Primary School will attend the ritual which promises to be colourful and imaginative! Year 12 Student Leaders will attend the 7:30am Ash Wednesday Mass at Mary, Mother of Mercy Church, receive their ashes and bring the blessed ashes back to school. From there these will be distributed by class teachers in classrooms.

Shrove Tuesday

Pancakes, cooked and pre-packaged by the Hospitality students, the Interact group will take care of advertising and selling them at morning tea on Shrove Tuesday $2.00 for a two pancake serve. All proceeds to Project Compassion.

Understanding Adolescence

Adolescence is the transitional stage of development that is usually associated with the teenage years. In 2018, the Australian Curriculum Assessment Authority, redefined adolescence as affecting young people aged between 10-24 years. During this time, they experience rapid physical, cognitive and psychosocial growth which affects how teenagers feel, think, make decisions and interact with the world around them.

During adolescence, a child's brain can be considered as being “under-construction”. The rate at which this progresses will vary depending on the individual and also their gender. As a result, some parents may view adolescence as stressful or difficult. However, it does not need to be. Setting boundaries, implementing consistent monitoring and maintaining a strong and loving connection will help families adjust during this time.

It is also an important time to keep the communication lines open through clear and age-appropriate conversations. Speak openly about changes that they are experiencing and be conscious of their mental health as many of the conditions people confront in adulthood, can begin to manifest in adolescence.

In this edition of SchoolTV, adult carers can learn how to guide and best support their young person as they transition through adolescence. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month’s edition, and we always welcome your feedback.

If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Homework Club

Our first Homework Club for 2022 was Thursday the 17 February 3:00-4:00pm.

Homework Club is held in the library every Thursday afternoon (except for the last week of each term). It is a great way for students to access support with their homework and assignments, access the library resources or just have a quiet place to work. Support and supervision is provided by the Support Teachers - Leigh Dornan, Maureen Lill, Lauren Mitchell and Sam McMenamin.

As the name suggests students participating in Homework Club need to be working on school work. Those who aren’t or do not have any work to complete will be asked to leave. All students are required to sign in when they arrive (no later than 3:15pm, students are not allowed to leave the campus and then return for Homework Club) and sign out when they leave. Younger Primary School siblings are not permitted to attend Homework Club.

All staff and students attending are required to wear a face mask.

If you have any questions about Homework Club please contact the Learning Support Department.

Assistant Principal Senior Curriculum

Junior Curriculum

With the start of the new school year upon us, I would like to introduce myself; my name is Wes Guthrie, Assistant Principal Junior Curriculum.

This will be my third year teaching on the Gold Coast, after spending two years at St Joseph’s Coomera as Senior Curriculum Leader. After graduating from the University of Western Sydney, I began my career as the Sports Coordinator and high school HPE teacher at a Selective high school in South West Sydney. After completing my time in South West Sydney in 2011, I became the HPE Coordinator and then the Year 7-12 Curriculum Coordinator at Bethany Catholic College in Sydney for eight years. During this time, I also received my Master’s degree in educational leadership and Graduate Certificate in Religious Education.  These years were very formative in my growth as an educator and provided a solid foundation of quality leadership in curriculum and a clear focus on pedagogy in the classroom. It is also during this time I was involved in Senior External Marking where I learnt vital skills in promoting student performance for students in Year 12. I  have qualifications in high-performance coaching and have worked eight years as the Pathways Coach at NRL South Sydney Rabbitohs and I am currently the Head of Performance at Tweed Seagulls. My wife also teaches at the College and my two eldest children attend Marymount Primary. The warm welcome and sense of community at the College has been much appreciated. I look forward to participating in the Marymount Community whilst supporting and nurturing your child’s journey at Marymount College.

Electives

The processing of subject changes for Year 8 and 9 students has now been completed. Students will be provided with the opportunity to make changes to their electives in Semester 2.

Year 12 Update

Key Dates

  • Friday 21 October—Year 12 Farewell Assembly
  • 24 October-15 November—Year 12 External Exams
  • Tuesday 15 November —Graduation Liturgy
  • Thursday 17 November—Year 12 Formal
Back on campus

It has been wonderful to have the students back at school, and the energy and enthusiasm of the seniors was evident on their first day back. There are some very strong bonds amongst the seniors and we look forward to them galvanising further this year.

Jerseys

The Year 12s were welcomed back with the handing out of the senior jerseys. These jerseys are symbolic of their standing in the College and are always met with great excitement. After receiving permission to wear them on their first day, we remind students, parents and caregivers that from this point forward the jerseys are only to be worn on Thursdays with the sports uniform, or during designated exam block periods.

Expectations

Now that we are back, students are reminded to follow the expectations of the College with regards to their uniform, punctuality and conduct. The sooner the seniors can click back into ‘school mode’, the sooner they will be able to concentrate on their studies and enjoy their senior year. We thank parents and caregivers for encouraging their sons and daughters to adhere to the rules in place.

Valentine’s Day

The Year 12s were greeted on Monday morning with a little note of affection attached to their lockers courtesy of Ms Henttonen, with the assistance of some of our student leaders. Random acts of kindness like this allow people to know they are important and build connections among the cohort.

Traditionally we have had cupids delivering roses to students on this day, but with the delayed start to the year, the celebration of Valentine’s Day in this way has also been delayed. Students will still get the chance to purchase a chocolate rose to be delivered to the recipient of their choice, with all money raised to be donated to Caritas.

College Captains

Hi, my name is Lily Puffett and last year I was fortunate to achieve the position of School Captain for 2022. In my free time, I enjoy playing guitar and surfing with friends but over the years I have also come to enjoy getting amongst exciting opportunities at Marymount.

I started my journey at this school in Year 7 after moving from St Augustine’s Primary School. I found it to be a big adjustment as previously there were only 60 other kids in my grade. I struggled to talk to new people and to be confident in myself, but as the years went by, I slowly learnt to come out of my shell and decided to make it my mission to be inclusive and give others a warm welcome wherever I went.

Hi, my name is Nicholas Ranson, and along with Lily, I have been given the exciting opportunity of leading the school through 2022. I enjoy reading, surfing and relaxing with friends, although I have recently devoted most of my time to leadership and interact duties, and achieving highly in my scholastic subjects.

A student of Marymount since prep, I feel a deep connection to this school. Much like Lily, I have made it my mission to express love and compassion towards my peers and teachers. While I have received the honour of school captain this year, I feel no different in my drive to promote an inclusive, encouraging environment for our Marymount community.

We feel deeply honoured to be supported by our peers as Captain, and we know that the leadership team will make this year one to remember. The theme we created, Let Your Light Lead the Way and we believe this encapsulates what we want to achieve as a cohort. We want to inspire younger grades as well as the current Year 12s to find their passions, meet new people and to be confident in who they are.

In terms of what is currently underway, the leadership team has been busy organising our belated Valentine’s Day celebrations. Unfortunately, due to the delayed start to the year, Valentine’s Day roses could not be delivered on time, however, we will be selling chocolate roses in the P&F Courtyard and J&K block from Thursday 17 February. So, if you have a special someone or you want to treat yourself, come buy a chocolate rose and support Caritas Australia.

Overall, we want to wish everyone a safe and healthy start to the year. We know Covid has brought many challenges to the new Year 7s and the rest of the school, but we know that we can all get through it with the support of each other, our teachers and loved ones. If you ever see us around the school, don’t hesitate to come say hi as we would love to get to know more of you as the year goes on!

Kind Regards,

Lily Puffett and Nicholas Ranson

Year 8 Update

Key Dates

  • Monday 6-Tuesday 7 June—Night of Living History
Welcome

After a delayed start to the year, the Year 8 team are happy to be back in person to kick off an exciting 2022.

Our cohort is growing, with 12 new students in Year 8 this year. It has been great to see the students making them feel welcome, taking them into their friendship groups and in general being supportive and helping where needed. As well as students, we have two new teachers joining our pastoral team. We welcome Mr Dominic Campbell for PI and Mrs Amanda Williams for PJ. Both have brought energy and a sense of community to our pastoral team.

STAC Nominations

As we start our pastoral lessons, the focus for the start of the year is on building up our leadership team. We have commenced our STAC nominations and over the next week, we will vote in our two STAC representatives as well as our pastoral leaders.

Class Matters

As mentioned earlier we started late, however, classes are on and we are making up for time missed. It’s important to see every student here, every day. Along with being present we also need to be organised. Every student needs to be taking and using their record book in classes. Parents and guardians should be actively asking to see their child’s record book to keep up to date on homework and communication from the class teacher. A very important tool that needs to be treated with respect.

The Arts

The Arts are Academically and Creatively Amazing at Marymount College!

Marymount College is recognised for the very high-quality Art subjects on offer for students each year and the Arts at Marymount are very much alive and vibrant!

The enormous positive impacts that participating in The Arts can have on students’ academic and non-academic success is evident at Marymount. We must congratulate our 2021 Year. 12 students of Dance, Drama, Film Television and New Media, Music, Music Extension and Visual Arts who achieved significantly outstanding high results both with internal and external assessments. As educators of Art subjects, we understand the rigour and great academic level of engagement combined with the freedom of creativity our students need to be successful.
As Head of Arts at Marymount College, I am proud Marymount College has invested in the five Arts subjects: Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music and Visual Arts and the value they have to offer our students.
The Coordinators of each Arts subject are highly qualified and passionate teachers that provide our students authentic and valuable learning opportunities inside and outside of the classroom.
It gives me great pleasure to formally acknowledge these teachers and the hard work they have done and continue to do as we strive to provide your children with knowledge and skills that focus on educating the ‘whole’ student.

The Arts Department of Marymount College
Throughout the year the Arts at Marymount College will be keeping you informed through the College Newsletter on the lifelong learning and inspiring teaching that is occurring in our classrooms, as well as profiling our teachers and comments from our students.

Marymount College- Where education in The Arts provide students with the attributes and skills, they need to prepare them for higher education, work and engagement in a complex and rapidly changing world.

Year 10 Science opportunity Australian Brain Bee Challenge

The Australian Brain Bee Challenge (ABBC) is a competition for high school students in Year 10 to learn about the brain and its functions, learn about neuroscience research, find out about careers in neuroscience and to dispel misconceptions about neurological and mental illnesses. There are three rounds to the Australian Brain Bee Challenge.

Round 1 (online quiz) is held during Brain Awareness Week. The learning content is a series of online modules about the brain and its function. Participating students will complete an online quiz in the last week of March to determine their knowledge and understanding of the structure and function of the brain. The online quiz is hosted on the Education Perfect testing platform. If a student does well on the quiz, they will then be invited to take part in Round 2.

Round 2 are the Regional Finals, held in each state in Australia and New Zealand. Students who achieve a high score in Round 1 are invited to attend a full day of activities at The University of QLD St Lucia campus. The exact timing of the day of activities will be determined by the Brain Bee Challenge state coordinators in the period between June – August.
On that day, as well as participating in two rounds of live questioning to determine who will become the state/region champion, students also have a day filled with activities to educate them about neuroscience and associated research. This may include lab tours, demonstrations, lectures, experiments, and the opportunity to speak to researchers. There is also a team competition on the day where schools compete against each other to win prizes for their school.
If successful there is then the Australian & International finals for Round 3.

If you would like more information or would like to register to be part of this competition, please email Mrs Baker Kristina.baker@marymount.qld.edu.au or see me in my office G105.

Josie played in the midfield for most of the game and was sent up forward on occasions to ‘rest’. In a tight battle, Josie’s Suns took the win 45 to 33, with Josie being named player’s player of the game by her teammates. Congratulations Josie on a great game and we look forward to watching you play for the school in the Q Cup next term!
