FROM OUR NETWORK

A word from the Director

Professor Barbara McPakeI will be stepping down as Director of the Institute at the end of 2022. I have loved leading the Nossal Institute and will be focusing on contributing to processes that will ensure our future with a sustained focus and continued growth in scale, impact and global reputation.

During the COVID pandemic, we all clearly saw the consequences of disconnection between the systems working toward our health. Our multi-disciplinary team builds understanding of the complex interactions between political, social, cultural, industrial, agricultural and ecological factors that influence health. As an organisation, we have continued to refine and clarify our focus as ‘Systems Thinkers for Global Health’ (see our new explainer diagram below).

We recognise health outcomes are reliant on multiple relationships, processes and systems and are supporting our partners to use systems thinking to advance health equity, inclusion and ecological sustainability.

The Institutes' impact in Global Health continues to grow. We hope you will enjoy reading about some of the projects we are working on to strengthen the quality, affordability and inclusiveness of health systems in the Asia and Pacific regions.

Stay well
Barbara

We are Systems Thinkers

Our purpose is to improve the health of all people globally by deepening our collective understanding of how multiple systems operate and interact to shape health through applied research, learning and partnership. Using a systems lens, the Nossal Institute for Global health supports the strengthening of health systems towards achieving health equity, inclusion, sustainability, people centredness, resilience and security.

Public health policing and police partnerships

Law enforcement plays an important but often unrecognised and role in achieving public health goals. Police too often are seen as - and too often are - part of the problem, not a potential part of the solution.

Professor Nick Crofts has co-edited a collection of essays and case studies, demonstrating the alternatives - public health policing and police partnerships.

Implementing Evidence-Based Rehabilitation
SHORT COURSE

Rehabilitation is complex. Without evidence we don’t know if our interventions are doing more good than harm. Implementation Science gathers evidence about what works to improve outcomes.

We have developed a short course to help professionals, and support their implementation efforts to change, adopt, implement and sustain evidence-based rehabilitation interventions, program or practices.
