From the Principal's Desk

We have had a wonderful week since the last news briefing. On Friday we held our Inter-house Gala, where excellent swimmers were showcased and a huge amount of gees was displayed by all the houses.  Congratulations to Lepus, who were the overall winners, with two new records, and to Lacerta who won the Spirit Cup.  This was followed by an Inter-house Talent Competition. Congratulations to Sarah Pengilly (Cygnus) and Lima Gqomfa (Corvus) for their joint 1st place, they truly deserved their win.  Congratulations to Gabi Roodt (Lepus), who came 2nd, and Kayli October (Corvus) who came 3rd. Anvesha Srivastava (Cygnus) also won a special mention certificate. It was a very enjoyable event and I was blown away by both the talent of the performers and the love shown by the supporters.

We held two very successful Open Days for Grade 7 learners and were able to showcase our beautiful facilities and amazing curricular and extracurricular offerings.  Thank you to those staff and learners who gave of their time so willingly.

You will have noticed that the new COVID-19 regulations no longer require those who test positive without symptoms to self-isolate.  I ask, however, that families are considerate of others when making this decision.  We’ve managed to keep COVID infections picked up at school incredibly low and would like to keep it this way.  Please do note that with the new regulations in place classes are no longer automatically streamed online and those missing classes need to ensure that they make contact with their teachers to keep up to date with their work.  Medical certificates are still required for any assessments missed.

Thank you so much to all the parents who generously donated cakes and eats for the School Birthday celebrations.  It was so good to see that everyone had ample to eat.  The food trucks were a great success.  I encourage you to all keep Thursday 24 March free to come along to the RGHS food fair where our own parent volunteers will be selling many different tasty treats at the end of term.  If the birthday celebration is anything to go by, then you will be missing out if you are not there.  We hope that you will be able to assist with donations again for this event.

There are many opportunities for parents to be involved this year in various activities so please do watch this space for more events.  We have the opportunity for a family or group of families to club together to sponsor one of the three trees we hope to plant along the path to the tuck shop.  This will provide much needed shade for break times.  To this end, we hope to plant more mature trees so the benefit can be more immediate.  Should you be interested please do contact Ms Edries, our Communications and Fundraising Manager, edriesu@rghs.org.za.  It is recommended that we plant indigenous yellowwood trees to fit in with the current ‘language’ of that area. Donations over R5000 will have a name plaque placed with the tree acknowledging your generous donation.

I wish you all an amazing last two weeks of February; the year is flying by.

Sports Update 17 February 2022

The second Inter-House event with our new houses took place on Friday 11 February in the form of the Inter-House swimming gala. And, what a colourful, fun and noisy event it turned out to be. Thank you to the Spirit House Leaders for so ably assembling their swimming teams and ensuring that there were participants in every event.

A special mention must be made of the U19 team representing Lepus who broke two of the school relay records. Erin Daffarn, Anna Gray, Jaime Kelly and Tyra Phipson (all Grade 12s) broke both of the relay records, one dating back to 2010. A huge thank you to our swimming captain’s mom, Mrs Janine Gray, for handing over the prizes to our winning individuals and teams.
