This past month, SVC has been busy working on our two new competition songs for the upcoming video contest. It’s giving us a sense of normalcy to be thinking about contest again!
In addition to our new riser trailer, we also purchased a new sound system in anticipation of getting back to live rehearsals in February.
And we’ve got coaching on the calendar with Erin Howden, Ryan Heller, and Jim Arns. Lucky for us, our director, Dede Nibler, is a big believer in “Music Education never stops.”
Special thanks to chorus member Valerie Richie for all her work in getting a grant application in to the Sacramento Arts Council. Music is such a vital part of any thriving community, and we’re already planning this year’s local events, beginning with Singing Valentine Grams in February (via phone only at this time).
We’ve had several wonderful guests in recent weeks, and we hope to see all of them at our next rehearsal so that they can experience the huge thrill of hearing 4-part harmony in person!

Song of Sonoma entered the new year full of resolution and renewal, despite the fact we have been relegated back to Zoom. So, we took great advantage to learn new and relearn choreography, courtesy of Lynda Casillas and our wonderful choreo team. We had a fun “movie” night, watching our old performances and reminiscing about how we love being live on stage. Between our costumes and music, stage sets and audiences, we relived fabulous times with our “Night at the Oscars” and “60’s Show.” We are even more eager and anxious to get back on stage and perform. AIM Weekend was a treat, and it is inspiring to see and hear the novice quartets/double quartets and experience the AIM sessions. We truly appreciate all of the time and effort to produce these great weekends for us, and the expertise from Jennifer Cooke and Julie Starr was very helpful, particularly as we regroup. We will be sure to use our voiced fricatives and work on our Pringle tongues! We look forward to being back together in person in February!

Southern Oregon Sound (SOS) was delighted to welcome two new members to our chorus in January. Peg Mathews recently moved to Southern Oregon from Montana, where she was a member of Helena Xpress Singers Chorus. Peg brings her lovely lead voice to the chorus, and we are so happy to have her. Summer Couch is a tenor who re-joined the chorus after a time as Chapter-at-Large. Summer is also the tenor of Passin' Notes Quartet and we're so happy to have her on the risers with us once more.
We had a fabulous first coaching session in Medford with Kathy Scheel on January 22nd. We had a lot of fun and worked hard to set our interp for contest in Eugene. Thanks so much to Kathy for her valuable teaching both individually and with our collective chorus to set us on our way towards a great performance. We shared pizza after our rehearsal and had a chance to visit. One of our members discovered that she and Kathy had attended the same high school in Washington and had mutual friends!
Kathy also coached Passin’ Notes the evening before our chorus coaching and we enjoyed wine and snacks afterwards. It’s always a treat to combine some social activities with learning opportunities. We’re looking forward to additional sessions with Kathy in weeks before contest.

It's already the middle of February - time is sure flying by! January was a transitional month for us. With the Omicron surge, we were cautious as we came back to rehearsing this year. We had Zoom-only rehearsals the first two weeks of the month, where we worked on vocal skills and our contest set.
On the third rehearsal of the month, we had a full in-person rehearsal where we focused only on choreo and did not sing in an abundance of caution. On our final week, Julie coached a double quartet for the singing portion of the rehearsal so that both Zoom attendees and a small number of in-person attendees could benefit from the insights.
As cases go down and we enter February, we're starting to be able to sing in person again! Looking forward to a lot more singing as we approach contest in a couple months. We're also doing a virtual Gala and Auction in March - save the date!

|
|
|
The wait is over!
Sweet Adelines International announces:
Small & Midsize Chorus Director Scholarship
for International Education Symposium
July 20-24, 2022
The Small and Midsize Chorus Director Scholarship is available to frontline directors of small and midsize choruses to attend Sweet Adelines International sponsored events which include director education.
This scholarship will help support the musical education journey of directors of small and midsize choruses by providing financial resources to attend an internationally sponsored event. The ideal candidate will demonstrate commitment, dedication, and passion for learning and teaching the barbershop style, and continuing growth in musical and leadership skills.
This scholarship is possible thanks to the generous giving from individuals in our wonderful Sweet Adelines community. The number of scholarships available is, in part, dependent on the contributions received from generous members. If you would like to serve our community in this way please contact our Chief Philanthropy and Administrative Officer Susan Smith at: susan@sweetadelines.com.
The application cycle runs November 15, 2021
through January 25, 2022 and can be found at www.sweetadelines.com/IES2022.
