Two new IRO Judges
join the team

In mid-January, the examination of five judge candidates took place in the Slovenian port city of Koper during a two-day event.

We congratulate Dr. Pavla Foltynová (CZ) and Roman Starman (SI) on their successful examination and look forward to assigning them as judges at International IRO Testing Events in the future.

We hope that the three candidates, who unfortunately did not qualify for our judges' circle, will seize the opportunity and take part in the exam again in two years' time.

A special thanks goes to the experienced IRO Judges Charlotte Kranz, Katja Skulj and Pavel Šabacký, who acted as evaluators of the judge candidates. At the same time, we would like to thank IRO Spokesperson for Training & Judges Jerneja Ternovec for the organisation and professional supervision of the event on site.

2nd IRO World Championship in Avalanche Search

From 3 to 6 February 2022, the 2nd IRO World Championship for Search and Rescue Dogs in Avalanche Search took place in Pitztal, Tyrol. Canines from six nations took part in the international competition.

The best team performance at this year's World Championship was shown by Jantine Boerrigter and dog Andy van Romantos Hoeve from the Netherlands. Well done!
Congratulations also to all other dog handlers on their great results.

Many thanks to the RHVÖ, the numerous helpers and partners who made this successful event possible.

Meet the team: Faces behind the Deployment Department

Spokesperson for Deployment Markus with Monti and Paddy
Deputy Spokesperson for Deployment Alexander with Risha

Markus, the mission expert with vision

Markus has been an honorary member of the IRO Board since May 2016, first as President and since 2020 as Spokesperson for Deployment. He has many years of experience as a leader of USAR teams and is an avid search and rescue dog handler himself. His ambition is to continuously develop the IRO and to set standards that are globally acknowledged. With the guidelines for the national and international MRT, the IRO has already succeeded in creating important standards for operational search and rescue dog teams. For him, the main task for the next few years will be to approach authorities and emergency organisations in order to implement these performance standards worldwide.

What Markus particularly appreciates about the IRO network is the solidarity and the community. It is the common goal that unites several hundred search and rescue dog teams around the world, who train together and exchange ideas. This camaraderie is what drives the IRO.

Markus is very lucky to be able to combine search and rescue dog work with his job. As a USAR instructor, he is dedicated to rescuing buried victims after building collapses and often demonstrates the importance of the search and rescue dog in this context.

Markus' motto in life – Life is like a ball: there are an infinite number of sides and sometimes even the side facing away from us turns out to be the right one to move forward.

Alexander, the congenial all-rounder

Lawyer, veterinarian and historian Alexander joined the IRO Board as Deputy Spokesperson for Deployment at the end of 2020. He very much appreciates the opportunity to help shape a globally unique platform for search and rescue dog activities such as the IRO. For him, the worldwide networking and the exchange among like-minded people are quite unique.

Through his honorary commitment, he would like to contribute to promoting and challenging dogs through professional training – with a clear goal in mind: to save human lives. As a veterinarian, he also pays special attention to the well-being of the canines. Moreover, he shares his expertise in presentations, publications, trainings and other events of the IRO.

Alexander has been working in the search and rescue dog field for about 15 years, as a dog handler, as a veterinarian and as a member of the Austrian Armed Forces. What fascinates him most about working with SAR dogs is the dogs' performance, their enthusiasm and the training opportunities. The developments in search and rescue dog training are immense and let him learn something new every day.

Alexander's motto in life – There is no such thing as boredom.
