Dear Maynard Family,

We want to welcome Maynard Institute Board Chair and Senior Editor at The Undefeated, John X. Miller to the Maynard 200 Fellowship faculty as executive-in-residence of our new track for frontline editors and managers. All potential Maynard 200 applicants are invited to join us on February 24th for a special information session with alumni guest speakers to answer frequently asked questions. Register today to reserve your spot.

This year, we're already celebrating Maynard Family wins, including the Oakland inaugural poet laureate and Oakland Voices alumna, Ayodele Nzinga, who is featured reciting her work in a newly released New Yorker Documentary, The Game God(s). Plus, Ernesto Aguilar, a Maynard 200 alum and the recently promoted Director of Radio Programming at KQED, wrote an interesting blog analyzing the impact of Latino/a/e/x audience growth on public media. Find links to these articles and more exciting program updates below.

Thank you to Ashton Lattimore, Maynard 200 alum and Editor-in-Chief of Prism, who shared a fantastic job opportunity with us for a Senior Climate and Environmental Justice Reporter, also listed below. The Maynard Institute strives to nurture and advance the careers of media professionals of color. If your news organization is hiring, please send job postings our way by replying to this email.

Stay positive. Test negative.

With gratitude,
Evelyn Hsu and Martin G. Reynolds

When Women Make Headlines
By Leonardo Nicoletti and Sahiti Sarva
This interactive visual essay documents "the (mis)representation of women in the news." And how have headlines about women changed over time?"

Sincerely, Leaders of Color: This is my commitment as an ally and a leader
By Greg Burton
Read the latest in the special series presented by Open News, with the support from The American Press Institute. The series asks "leaders, allies, and rebels — of all colors — to make commitments and promises for the year ahead, and how they’ll contribute to making safer, healthier newsrooms for all journalists of color."

The Seattle Asian American Film Festival (SAAFF) recently published on Instagarm "SAAFF would like to make an apology to the Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander community and also use this as a learning opportunity for the greater Asian American community. We no longer use terms like “AAPI” because it perpetuates harm in the continued conflation of NH/PI folks with Asians.”

This move by SAAFF echoes the sentiments from the 2020 article by Naomi Ishisaka published in The Seattle Times entitled Why it’s time to retire the term ‘Asian Pacific Islander.’
