President Eisgruber’s annual State of the University letter, 2022

Presenting the modern face of science
Whose stories do you tell when you teach science and engineering? Newton? Galileo? Maybe Marie Curie? That question was posed to eight members of Princeton’s science and engineering faculty as part of their work in a Community of Practice group focused on adding diverse voices to course materials. Princeton’s Council on Science and Technology (CST) created this inaugural Community of Practice group last year as a step toward helping students from underrepresented groups participate and succeed in STEM courses.

NEWS ITEMS

Princeton recognizes 50 years of community and inclusion
As Princeton opened its doors to women and greater numbers of underrepresented students in the late 1960s and early 1970s, there was a clamoring for spaces where those students could gather for support and strength. Both the Third World Center (today’s Carl A. Fields Center for Equality and Cultural Understanding) and the Women*s Center (now the Gender + Sexuality Resource Center) were founded amidst this massive social and cultural shift on campus, providing much-needed community and connection. The 2021-22 academic year marks the 50th anniversary of these groundbreaking campus organizations. A series of lectures, programs and events is being held throughout the year to honor their legacy of community, identity, collaboration and inclusion at Princeton.

Princeton invigorates ties with New Jersey’s community colleges
Since the 1970s, Princeton has nurtured connections with New Jersey’s community colleges, offering community college instructors opportunities for continuing education at Princeton, while sending graduate students — the next generation of Princeton-educated academics — to teach the wide range of students seeking two-year degrees at county colleges. This academic year, Princeton will send 20 graduate students — its largest cohort — to teach courses at Mercer County Community College, Camden County College and Rowan College of South Jersey through the Community College Teaching Partnership, which offers teaching fellowships to current doctoral students.
