"My eye is not on the density of the fog, but on the living God who controls every circumstance of my life." -George Mueller, evangelist
FOCUS ON THE FOG OR FOCUS ON THE FATHER

Fairview Family - grace, mercy, and peace to you. Though the photograph above portrays what was a foggy, cold morning - that was Tuesday and this is Friday - the scene outside has changed. Actually the scene on Tuesday changed in minutes. I took the photo above and then walked into the Family Life Center for just a few minutes to grab some books I had left from Sunday. When I emerged, the fog had lifted.

I was reminded of how we can either focus on the fog (and when it's dense it's hard to see anything else) or we can focus on the one who can lift the fog. This went right along with my reading from the Psalms this week. For on Monday, I spent time in Psalm 20, which concludes "O Lord, save the king! May he answer us when we call." Tuesday, I read Psalm 21, which begins, "O Lord, in your strength the king rejoices, and in your salvation how greatly he exults! You have given him his heart's desire and have not withheld the request of his lips ... He asked life of you; you gave it to him ..." In summary, Psalm 20 ends with a plea (save me!) and Psalm 21 begins that God has done so. God delivers.

We don't know exactly the circumstances for David in Psalm 20, but it sounds like he prays for victory in battle. He trusts the Lord for the outcome as evidenced by verse 7: "Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God."

I suppose there are two dangers here that we must avoid - trusting in ourselves or not trusting at all (focusing on the fog). Instead let's focus on the Father and recognize that through his steadfast love we will not be moved (21:7).

Looking forward to worship with you.

Each month I'll use this space to suggest a book to you. February's book is one that I commend to you having just finished it myself. I picked it up when a member of presbytery said it was the best book he'd read on church government and leadership in a long time. Buy a copy wherever good books are sold. What are you reading these days? Let me know!
