The Kvarken Council EGTC has appointed Master of Political Sciences Ms Ida-Maria Huuhka as Communications Assistant from November 22nd, 2021. The position is located in Vaasa, Finland

Ms Veronica Berg appointed as Development Manager in Umeå, Sweden

Ms Berg’s role will consist in half of duties related to the Kvarken Council’s activities and in half of executive tasks within Föreningen Norden Västerbotten. In other words, the employment relationship is carried out in cooperation, whereby the post is a full-time position. This also grants the Kvarken Council its first employee on the Swedish side in a long time.

– A representative on the Swedish side has been on the agenda for a long time, and Veronica’s profile is exactly what we’re looking for. She has knowledge of regional and municipal issues, is familiar with politics and its functioning, has an established contact network, and possesses significant social competence. She’s also a motivated team player and will fit in just fine in our organization, says Mr Mathias Lindström, Director of the Kvarken Council.

In terms of Föreningen Norden, Ms Berg will develop the association’s activities in Västerbotten’s municipalities and gather the county’s organizations for increased contact with both Norway and Finland, all under the Board’s direction.

– This full-time position is the long-awaited result of enhanced cooperation between Föreningen Norden and the Kvarken Council and signifies the establishment of an office in Umeå. It’ll be exciting to work with Veronica and jointly strive to improve contact between people in the Nordic countries, continues Mr Sven-Olov Edvinsson, Chairman of Föreningen Norden Västerbotten.

Ms Ida-Maria Huuhka appointed as Communications Assistant

– We run numerous projects and have an active role in the dissemination of information in most of them. In addition, more and more organizations are joining our ranks at a steady pace. We have chosen to increase our communication efforts in order to guarantee transparent and current information about our organization and the projects we’re involved in as well as to more efficiently spread project results and information about our activities.
– The goal is to involve and inform a growing number of people of this interesting and dynamic region, of what’s going on and what we’re working for, tells Ms Johanna Häggman, the Kvarken Council’s Communications Manager.

Ms Huuhka will actively focus on the dissemination of information regarding e.g. Kvarkenfest, the Kvarken Council’s cultural festival celebrating the organization’s 50th anniversary in 2022. Moreover, Ms Huuhka will be involved in projects and assist the organization with her strengths.

– It’s incredible to get the chance to work for the Kvarken Council. I’ve worked with cross-border projects in the past, but I’m eager to develop my knowledge even further. Communication is close to my heart, and I want to help spread information about the Kvarken Council’s important work, tells the Kokkola-born Ms Huuhka.
The position is located in Vaasa, Finland.

We welcome both Ida-Maria and Veronica into our working community and rejoice over new forms of cooperation with Föreningen Norden Västerbotten!

FAIR – Promoting Electric Aviation

In a few years, electric aviation might become reality

Electric aviation may not be as utopian as it might seem. There are several companies that work on developing electrically driven passenger planes, and these planes can be in commercial use already in four-five years.
Electric aviation already a reality in the Kvarken region!
In November 2021 FAIR visited Skellefteå Airport and Green Flight Academy for a combined study visit and results presentation.
With 1 MW charging capacity installed, Pipistrel electric airplanes on-site and the world’s most sustainable flight academy, Skellefteå is a pioneer in the field of electric aviation.

Electric planes open up new possibilities for regional aviation

As electric planes enter the market in a few years, they will revolutionise the aviation industry. Not only will aviation become environmentally friendly, but suddenly entirely new routes might become profitable.

– Electric planes turn the traditional way of thinking upside down, as lesser trafficked flight routes might become interesting to operate due to lower costs. This is thanks to the fact that electric planes most likely will have lower operation and maintenance costs than traditional planes, explains Mr Mathias Lindström, Director of the Kvarken Council.

– In the end, everything is controlled by demand, but there are clear incentives for new patterns in air traffic.

A few years ago, the Kvarken Council started a project to gather knowledge on electric aviation. The idea is to prepare the region to make use of this new technology in the future, while also benefitting from being a forerunner in the field.

– Our region is unusually well-suited for electric aviation. It is not unrealistic to think that the Vaasa-Umeå route will be flown by electric planes in the future, Lindström notes.

FAIR – Promoting Electric Aviation

This is how you might get a cheap airline ticket in the future

Senior Design Researcher Mr Jeroen Peeters from RISE (Research Institute of Sweden) here together with his colleague Mrs Carita Roslund.

We are used to air travel with strict schedules, that are planned far in advance. But what if the departure times were not fixed, but flexible? And what if you could get a cheaper ticket by being flexible regarding your own departure time?

This is the future of regional air travel envisioned by Senior Design Researcher Mr Jeroen Peeters from RISE (Research Institute of Sweden). He has been part of The Kvarken Council’s project that explores the possibilities of electric aviation.

– To be honest, at first I thought the subject was a bit boring, explains Peeters.

– I thought electric aviation was just about switching the type of engine in the plane. After a while, however, I realized that the flexibility that comes with smaller planes that are cheaper to operate can also be translated into flexibility regarding other aspects of travelling.

The more Peeters dove into the subject, the more intriguing it got. He and his colleagues decided to develop a prototype for a booking app for the imaginary airline Volta, that operates small electric planes in the Kvarken region.

REPORT

Towards Electric Aviation in the Kvarken Region

This paper is a first investigation of the possibilities to establish a commercially viable regular commuter airline in east-west direction over the Kvarken strait between Finland and Sweden. Institutional solutions are proposed, as well as measures to be taken in order for the region to reap the benefits of such a route. Initially, the report thus deals with the most important question for a regional policy maker, the sources to and the creation of wealth in the region. It is suggested that the Kvarken region must use any investment in airlines in a strategy to increase its human capital. This will both attract industries and increase the sources of potential passengers for an airline.
