World Social Work Day Events 15th March 2022
World Social Work Day is a celebration and recognises the hard work and dedication of social workers on an international stage.
This year's theme: ´Co-building a New Eco-Social World: Leaving No One Behind´ coincides with the theme of the people´s summit that will take place on 29th June to 2nd July.  It presents a vision and action plan to create new global values, policies and practices that develop trust, security and confidence for all people and the sustainability of the planet.
The Yorkshire Urban and Rural Social Work Teaching Partnership are hosting 2 exciting virtual events focusing on the World Social Work Day theme.

The first event is a Practice Educator Event which provides a chance to celebrate our Partnership Practice Educators, for attendees to engage with key topics and reflect on their year and the challenges they have faced and overcome.  The event includes student nominated awards to recognise the commitment and hard work of our Practice Educators.

The second is the Annual Conference, which forms part of Social Work England's Social Work Week.  The theme 'Leaving No One Behind' complements the World Social Work Day Theme.  It provides the opportunity for partners in the sector to join the celebration.

Please feel free to join our events by using the links above and help us celebrate World Social Work Day.

Social care is a sector which offers lots of rewarding careers, with many different job roles and opportunities for progression.  It’s all about helping people.  It doesn’t matter what kind of academic background you have there is an option for you with many roles offering on-the-job training.  If you like working with people then somewhere in your community there’s a role you can do.

Continuous Professional Development
New CPD Requirements for Social Workers who want to Maintain Professional Registration
Social Work England listened to feedback and enhanced the continuing professional development (CPD) requirements, which affect all social workers looking to renew their registration this year.
All social workers in England must show they are keeping their skills up to date to maintain their professional registration and be able to practise.  The changes are being brought in following extensive consultation last year, to raise standards in the sector and help social workers get the most out of their learning.
Read about the changes
We are pleased to bring you a selection of lunchtime learning seminars.  The sessions are designed to reflect current development needs and are backed by research projects.  We want Social Workers to enjoy their jobs, feel supported and have learning opportunities available to support practice.
We are committed to developing your social work skills and experience, through a culture of continuous learning where you are inspired and can inspire others.

Research Informed Practice
The Pre-doctoral Local Authority Fellowship Scheme is now open for applications!
This initiative represents an exciting opportunity for a wide range of individuals.  The scheme supports the academic ambitions of individuals wishing to develop as health and/or social care researchers whilst remaining employed, or at least engaged, within local authorities or local authority supporting services.

This fully funded pre-doctoral fellowship enables awardees to retain their existing employment contracts and salaries, whilst protecting their time to prepare an application for a PhD fellowship and undertake a fully funded programme of relevant Masters level training.  The closing date for applications is 31st March 2022.

Anti Racism in Social Work
Launch of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan
Social Work England has made a commitment to #ActionNotJustWords by launching its first Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan during Race Equality Week. The plan details progress since its Statement of Intent published last year to set out its ambitions for operating with equality, diversity and inclusion as part of its core business.

Anti-Racist Practice
In a society that treats ‘whiteness’ as the default, racist ideas and beliefs arise in all areas of life and work.  The Teaching Partnership recently hosted an event from University of York which explored various aspects of anti-racism, including unconscious bias, in relation to social work practice.

Anti-Racism in Social Work
Events of the last year have brought racism to the forefront and prompted us all to reflect on racism, and our role in tackling inequality.  Social workers are central to the action we need to take to address the prejudice we see in society.

To support our students and social workers we have gathered together resources which explore this subject in more depth, and we hope will help you to reflect on practice.

Revisiting Safeguarding Practice
Fran Leddra and Mark Harvey, former Joint Chief Social Workers for Adults are delighted to see the publication of their adult safeguarding guide, which they pledged to produce as part of their annual report last year.
Lyn Romeo is back in post, of course, and we are pleased to continue the work on our shared priorities and support Lyn and her office to bring them to fruition.
'Continuous professional development in safeguarding practice is essential if we are to serve individuals, families, and communities well. The recently published guidance will support local authority social workers to refresh their knowledge and understanding of their roles and responsibilities in responding to enquiries and concerns. It also provides a useful directory and links to relevant legislation and good practice guidance.' Lyn Romeo, Chief Social Worker for Adults

Keep Up to Date on Children and Families
Why not follow Isabelle Trowler on Twitter.  Isabelle Trowler is Chief Social Worker, Children and Families, who shares sector wide information and articles, keeping those in the sector informed.
What do we know about children and young people deprived of their liberty in England and Wales? Following widespread concern in the child welfare system our newest report draws on national administrative data and research from the past 10 years.  It summarises what we know about the number of children held in different settings, who the children are, where they are placed, their experiences of secure care, and what happens to them afterwards.

Why are we depriving our most vulnerable young people of their liberty?
Is it care, or incarceration?

This animation by Nuffield Family Justice Observatory draws together some of the key findings from their latest report.
