Happy February! Though we have had a little snow this winter, the temperatures have been pretty pleasant this week. I sure am hoping we have enough cold days for good peaches and maybe a few less bugs this year. I feel like we have a ton of upcoming activities coming up in the next few weeks, we are rocking and rolling and I could not be more excited for our Extension work to be looking a little more normal. Several educational opportunities are embedded right here into this newsletter- click on any thing you may be interested in for more information.

Bermudagrass Hay Summit
The “Summit” is an intense, day-long program designed to meet the specific needs of dedicated, experienced bermudagrass hay producers that deal with the challenges of producing very high-quality hay demanded by their customers.
Topics Include:
- Weed Control Options in Bermudagrass Hay Fields with a Special Emphasis on Controlling Undesirable Grass Weeds
- Basics of Insect Pest Control/Management in Bermudagrass Hay Fields
- Nutrient Management Challenges and Opportunities for Bermudagrass Hay producers
- A “Boots on the Ground” Industry Perspective for Commodity Prices and Supply Chain Issues During the 2022 Growing Season, Cash Flow Budgeting for Bermudagrass Hay Producers During Challenging Economic Situations
- Roundtable Discussion “What we learned in 2021 that will help us be prepared for the challenges we will all face in 2022” and “Alternative forage crops that might allow commercial hay producers to decrease input costs and spread the economic risk associated with high quality hay production”

Inflation has re-emerged across the U.S. over the last several months. In December of 2021, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 7% compared to the prior year, the largest annual increase since 1982. While inflation has hit used vehicles, energy and utilities the hardest, food has not been immune to these price increases. These high food prices will affect consumers as we approach Super Bowl Sunday, which is the second-largest food consumption day of the year, following Thanksgiving.

Episode 32-2022 Alabama Row Crops Short Course-- In this episode, first-time host Audrey Gamble joins previous hosts Scott Graham and Katelyn Kesheimer to talk about the upcoming Alabama Row Crops Short Course. This year’s short course is January 18 and 19 and will be moving from its normal location in Auburn, Alabama to the capital city of Montgomery, Alabama.
Episode 31-Using Solar Technology-- In this episode, hosts Adam Rabinowitz and Katelyn Kesheimer sit down with Dennis Brothers, an Alabama Extension associate professor and member of the farm and agribusiness management team. In his role, Brothers works with farmers on the adoption and use of solar technology. The discussion today is centered around ways farmers can use solar technology on the farm and ways they can make money through solar leasing.
Episode 30-Winter Wheat & Weed Management- Hosts Scott Graham and Katelyn Kesheimer talk with David Russell, an Alabama Extension weed scientist, about the status of the state’s wheat crop. Wet weather has delayed harvest of summer crops such as soybeans–putting wheat planting behind. The group also discusses weed management in wheat.

The Alabama Cottage Food Law, which went into effect in 2014 and was revised in 2021, provides rules and regulations for foods prepared by cottage food entrepreneurs. These foods include jams and jellies that can be safely canned in a boiling water bath canner.
When making home-canned jams and jellies, use only recipes and procedures approved by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). You can find these on any state Extension website or on the National Center for Home Food Preservation website. These recommendations have been tested for safety...

The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program is a win-win for both Alabama growers and seniors. The program provides eligible seniors with fresh, nutritious, and locally grown fruits, vegetables, and herbs from farmers markets and roadside stands.
Each senior participant receives $30 on a benefit card to spend at an authorized Alabama farmers market or registered roadside stand. Seniors can sign-up to receive the benefit card through the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries’ Farmers Market Authority (FMA) website at fma.alabama.gov.
