Sharing Our Stories Heals the World

By the time the guest minister, Rev. Dr. Qiyamah A. Rahman speaks to CUUB on January 30 we will have In our stressful and often scary world, isolation plagues our society more than ever before in our lifetimes. Sharing our life stories can also help connect us, as well as change people’s minds to embrace truth and justice. This week, we will hear from a person with multiple minority identities, who uses their story as a constant tool for relationship building and healing.

jo mosher ( they / them / theirs) is a social justice activist, artist, teacher, speaker, musician, comic, writer, and filmmaker originally from the South. They are a nonbinary, genderfluid, transmasculine, pansexual Person of Color. jo's Calling is to use all of these identities that they possess - and many more - to help change people's hearts and minds to be more tolerant, compassionate, and all-around Woke.

Widening the circle: Hospitality

In June 2020, the UUA Commission on Institutional Change issued a comprehensive and challenging report, Widening the Circle of Concern.  This was the culmination of three years’ work auditing the power structures and analyzing systemic racism within our religious denomination.

This month I’ll address two of the Commission’s topics, Theology and Hospitality, under the rubric of the February Soul Matters theme, “Widening the Circle.”  What impact might they have on life at CUUB?

Widening the circle at CUUB

This month the theme for our Services has been "Widening the Circle" and we have explored questions regarding the UUA study about systems of white privilege, racism, classism that exist within the UUA itself.  On the final Sunday in February, we will bring this discussion home to CUUB.

What have we already done to widen our circle of concern that we can celebrate?  What work do we need to continue to do?  Like in the past, we will set up guided discussion groups that help us explore and learn from each other.  This is an opportunity for us to work together in our beloved community to strive for a more just and compassionate world and widen our circle of concern in our own community.  Think global... act local.

Want to keep enjoying services in CUUB’s building?

Our Tech Team needs more volunteers to keep us going on in Zoom and in the sanctuary.  We need people to make slide decks, host the Zoom meetings, admit people from the waiting room into the service, project the meeting in the sanctuary, and run the sound board (NOT all at the same time!).
If you can do any of these things, your help is needed to lighten the load and allow us to expand our capabilities for hybrid (live and streamed) services.

Please contact erika.warner@comcast.net if you think you might be able to help, or know of someone who may be willing!

Thanks,
CUUB Tech Team

Minister's Corner

By now, you’ve probably seen the CUUB News Special Edition, inviting you to come in person!!! this Sunday, to view the worship service on a large screen.  This is exciting news, even for me, as I sit here in Albuquerque, over 1500 miles away.  Here, too, the COVID numbers are improving, so I’m more hopeful than I’ve been in a while.  While we are hardly “out of the woods,” the path seems a little clearer than it did before.

Of course, the step CUUB is taking is cautious one – so cautious, in fact, that the News announcement doesn’t call it a re-opening.  “Zoom Watch Party” is perhaps the best description, even though it’s a masked party without refreshments.  The party will also be continuing in more than one venue, as many members still don’t feel safe or comfortable attending indoor events.  I encourage you to be mindful of those who must continue worshiping via Zoom – to reach out to them and make sure they know they’re still beloved members of this community.

Thanks are due to many people for making Sunday’s watch party possible, and I hope all of them will be thanked by name in a future issue.  For now, I’ll lift up CUUB’s leaders, especially the Board, who in uncertain times wrestled with the question of reopening, and who struggled to make evidence-based decisions in accord with Unitarian Universalist values.  The decisions they made this year were never easy, but always involved attention to science, and care for the safety and well-being of all.  Well done, good and faithful servants!

Love and blessings,
Rev. Sue
