Connection

There has been increased discussion in recent years about connecting and staying connected, which is a good thing.  We know that loneliness is detrimental to both individuals and communities and that social connection and respectful relationships are important for our health and wellbeing.

But connection doesn’t just happen. It takes effort.

That doesn’t mean grand gestures or big things, however, it is about ‘doing something.’

Often it is the small things, which make a meaningful difference.

This month we launch Neighbour Day: Connecting Communities for 20 years in our nation’s capital with a raft of very neighbourly supporters. Nick Tebbey, National Executive Officer for Relationships Australia joins us on the Verandah and shares his thoughts on ‘connection in action in our latest Neighbourly blog. We encourage you to enter our Tell Us Your Story competition and share your story of connection with Australia AND invite you to register your event online.

As always, we share more ideas to connect and celebrate Neighbour Day 2022 - and every day!

So grab a cuppa and join us on your virtual Verandah!

20 Year Anniversary of Neighbour Day Launches

Celebrate

This week Relationships Australia officially launched the 20th Anniversary of Neighbour Day in our nation’s capital.

Ngunnawal Elder, Aunty Violet Sheridan opened the celebratory event with warm welcome to all those in attendance, telling of the importance of neighbours and connection across all communities, to make the country a better place for everyone.

The co-chairs of the Parliamentary Friends of Ending Loneliness group, Dr Fiona Martin MP, and Mr Andrew Giles MP both spoke in strong support of Neighbour Day and the collective need to continue to pursue an end to loneliness and its many ill effects.

Dr Andrew Leigh MP, who is also a respected author and has studied the topic of loneliness, discussed the ongoing need to focus on social connection and how using the language of ‘we’ and ‘us’ instead of ‘I’ and ‘me’, can foster stronger communities to the benefit of everyone.

In acknowledgement of the 20 year Anniversary, Relationships Australia gathered a majority of Neighbour Day’s key Ambassadors from around the country: Costa Georgiadis, Natalie Ahmat, Mitch McPherson and Neighbour Day Founder, Andrew Heslop.

To find out more about the event, and to hear what our Ambassadors had to say, read the full media release here.

Nick's Story of Connection

Nick Tebbey National Executive Officer of Relationships Australia joined us on the Verandah to share his thoughts on connection in this Neighbourly Blog.

“When I was growing up in the suburbs of Adelaide in South Australia, we knew our nearby neighbours well. The kids would play in the street together, and our parents would lend each other a hand: bringing in each other’s bins, collecting mail if a neighbour was on holidays, holding a spare key, and keeping an eye out for each other.

Throughout each year we would have occasional neighbourly gatherings – nothing big. A sausage sizzle, a garage sale or street cleanup – but in the main, we just waved, had the odd chat and lived side by side. Mostly harmoniously, but not always. No relationship is perfect; but knowing each other was helpful in managing issues before they become a problem…”

Where are you being neighbourly?

Australia's First Peoples have been living on the Australian continent for millennia. A simple step to get you started to know your community better, is knowing the name of the land, seas and waterways you're on. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australia is made up of many different and distinct groups, each with their own culture, customs, language and laws. They are the world’s oldest surviving culture; cultures that continue to be expressed in dynamic and contemporary ways.

You can find out where you are by visiting the AIATSIS map here.

When you register your Neighbour Day 2022 event or neighbourly action, tell us what Country you are on, and go into the draw to win a prize!  Register now.

These social connections may be one-off moments or regular and lasting interactions that create one to one relationships or become the starting point for an ongoing group.
