A Swissair ad reborn + a gem from BWIA

Swiss: European Rapid Transit System

Not long ago I came across a low resolution picture of a Swissair advertisement from the 1980s. It beautifully illustrated its European network, with routes stretching out from Switzerland like a spider web, a map with no geography. It was labelled European Rapid Transit System. I have re-created this ad and you can see the result above and below.

You can now purchase a copy of this beautiful retro Swissair map from the website. Available in A2 (420mm x 594mm).

British West Indian Airlines (BWIA)

BWIA, nicknamed BEE-WEE (now Caribbean Airlines) is the national airline of Trinidad and Tobago and serves the whole of the Caribbean. Its network once stretched much further including flights to the UK where its Airbus A340s were once a common sight at Heathrow. The airline published a few maps and one specially stands out, designed to mimic the look of a treasure map. How great is that.

The treasures of BEE-WEE. Maybe your idea of treasure is a sunken Spanish Gold fleet. Or just golden sun sliding into the beginning of a perfect Caribbean night. The islands of Bee-Wee are filled with treasures, from the flash of Angelfish in our gem-clear waters to ripe mangoes and cool run drinks and the warm smiles of people who have much to be happy about. AT BWIA, we love unspoiled islands, and we love taking you there. Which is why our airline—like our islands is different. Happy treasure-hunting.

Airport picture

For decades I have been making work about flying. Direction of Travel is one such project. Other projects include a long running portrait of the villages surrounding Heathrow airport. Another are observations from airports around the world following in the tradition of Fischli & Weiss. Here's a picture from Paris Charles De Gaulle with an Etihad aircraft reflected in the glass.
