First-Gen Spotlight: Welcome Our New GA!

Julie Nguyen | You First & Summer Studies Graduate Assistant

Julie is a first-year, first-generation graduate student in the Counselor Education program at VCU. She graduated from UVA in May 2021 where she worked as a Peer Advocate for their First-Generation Mentoring Network. She hopes to continue engaging with first-gen students as the You First GA and is excited to hear the unique experiences of VCU students. Come introduce yourself at first-gen events and other Summer Studies initiatives!

You First Upcoming Events

You First Presents: First-Gen Transfer Student Panel

When: Friday, February 17th, 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Where: This is a virtual session. Register at https://bit.ly/YouFirstPresents02172022.

What: Join this panel of current first-gen transfer students who will speak about their experiences at VCU and how they’re approaching graduation and career opportunities. The panel discussion will be facilitated by Ian Coyle and Elizabeth Bambacus, Ph.D.

You First Presents: Demystifying Undergraduate Research at VCU and Beyond

When: Friday, February 24th, 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Where: Academic Learning Commons (MCALC) room 2104. A virtual streaming option will also be available. Register at https://bit.ly/YouFirstPresents022422

What: Curiosity required, no previous experience necessary! Join us to discuss what to expect from an undergraduate research experience, how to prepare for it, and where to find opportunities at VCU and beyond. Research happens everywhere at VCU, not just in the lab. Find out where your passion for inquiry can take you next! Herb Hill will be our guest speaker.

Registration for Summer courses opens today! Find all the classes offered this upcoming Summer at https://summer.vcu.edu/summer-courses/

Have questions or want more information? Swing by our Summer Studies info table in the Student Commons on Tuesday, Feb. 15th, from 1-3pm and Wednesday, Feb. 16th, from 1-3pm. Come learn about your summer class options and pick up swag!
You First Spring Study Space
Come study with other first-gen students in the library! Thanks to Cabell Library, there's a space just for you in the Multipurpose Room (room 250 on the second floor) on the following days and times.

Mondays and Tuesdays from 5-10 p.m.
Thursdays from 12-3 p.m.
 

If you're new to this space, it's to the left of the stairs or to the right when you exit the elevator (the one by the circulation desk). You'll have to wind around for a bit, but it will be on your right.
Business Services Scholarship
VCU's Business Services Scholarship applications are due on Friday, February 18, 2022. These scholarships are open to any major. We highly encourage you to apply. The odds are often very good!

How to Apply Workshop Series: Spring 2022
Do you want to apply for a national scholarship, but not sure where to start? Attend the National Scholarship Office’s How to Apply Workshop Series! The NSO will be offering a 5-week series that will prepare participants to tackle major applications for postgraduate scholarships, including the Fulbright U.S. Student program, the Rhodes Scholarship, Marshall Scholarship, Mitchell Scholarship, Gates Cambridge Scholarship, Samvid Scholarship, PD Soros Scholarship, Schwarzman Scholars Program, Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program, and more!
