Black Excellence in Ed Studies Spotlight
|
This February, we celebrate the contributions of our Black students, faculty, and staff in Ed Studies.
Today, we highlight Nate Stewart (doctoral candidate in Educational Policy). Nate, a former middle school science teacher, has continuously pursued justice and equity for Black students at OSU and in the broader Columbus community. Since joining the First Educational Experience Program (FEEP) team as a GTA in 2017, Nate has contributed significantly to the programs’ shift to centering equity and justice, co-created the FEEP Students of Color (FSOC) group and pushed for anti-racist curriculum for pre-service teachers. The current study for his dissertation explores the dual political activity of BIPOC educators in their attempts to abolish and transform oppressive educational policy structures. He situates his work in relation to collective, multiracial, multigeneration, multivocal, and multicultural movements for educational justice. Nate will next be presenting as part of the Ed Studies Diversity Lecture Series on the topic "Black Educational Resistance & Justice Research: Centering Afrocentric Visions in Critical Educational Policy Studies" on February 22 at noon. This event is free an open to anyone who wishes to join!
We want to highlight more Black excellence in our department all month! Click the link below to share your story!

Olivia J. Hooker Distinguished Diversity Lecture
|
The Olivia J. Hooker Distinguished Diversity Lecture will be held on February 22 at 6 p.m. in Mershon Auditorium. Launched in 2019, the lecture series is named after an Ohio State alumna, Olivia J. Hooker, whom the world came to know through her extraordinary testimony about the Tulsa Race Massacre. She also was the first Black woman to actively serve in the US Coast Guard. This lecture series was created in order to celebrate diverse individuals whose work and lives advance the call to justice. This year's featured speaker is Nikole Hannah-Jones, Pulitzer Prize-winning report and author of The 1619 Project and Born on the Water. Registration is required. Both books by Nikole Hannah-Jones will be for sale before and after the event. Book signing will take place after the lecture. Please send questions to ehe-events@osu.edu.
