President's Message

Hello All,
What a warm snap we were having, I did a little flying last weekend while it was nice. While Tony was visiting a couple weeks ago, I managed to squeeze in 16.5 hours of flying, mostly working on instrument procedures, getting more comfortable with my avionics, and testing the TKS system. I had a great time and was amazed at how fast you could build ice for such a short time in the clouds. Everything worked great and I am getting more comfortable with the 210 and it’s avionics. We flew 1.5 hours in snow on our way to Flagstaff for lunch with friends at FL190 so I also got to exercise the oxygen system. I am happy to see the COVID cases coming down rapidly, maybe next month we can meet in person again! See you at this months zoom meeting!

Ray Scholarship Update - Todd
Todd is currently preparing for his FAA written test which is scheduled for this week. He is also preparing for his upcoming checkride. When successful, Todd will become the third Ray Scholar produced by Chapter 58!

Gone West - Jonathan Tibbets 1942-2021
 Jonathan Stewart Tibbets passed away peacefully on Monday, November 8, 2021, at 8:20 a.m. from complications of dementia and Alzheimer's Disease.
Jonathan was born on August 7, 1942, in Placerville, El Dorado, California. He was the son of Dorothy Eva White and Guy Emergene Tibbets. He served a full-time 30-month mission in Argentina for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1961 to1964. On January 30, 1965, he married Mary Elaine Marsh in the Oakland Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
In 1967, he graduated with honors receiving his bachelor's degree from Sonoma State College in Rohnert Park, California. Afterward, he moved his then family of four to Southern California to work on and receive his master's degree in Linguistics at the University of California, Irvine in 1969. He authored a Spanish curriculum at the college level. His linguistic talents took him to Nebraska where he taught Spanish at Bellevue College for four years. Eventually, he became the Vice President over Instruction at the Tooele Applied Technical College, where he retired in 2015.
He was active in the church all of life. His church service included being a counselor to the branch president in Nebraska City, Nebraska, callings in the Sunday School, Gospel Doctrine, Primary, and for several years, he served in the MIA for the handicapped. Jon also loved music and sang in ward choirs all his life.
Ever since he was a little boy, he loved airplanes and would point at them whenever they flew by. His love and determination to fly continued to develop as he took flight lessons and earned his private pilot's license in 1972. Sometimes he would fly his little family from Southern to Northern California and other little trips throughout the years. When some of his grandchildren lived in Burley, Idaho, he would fly from the Ogden airport to see them and take them on rides flying over their town and pointing out recognizable places including their homes. His biggest project for the last few decades has been working faithfully rebuilding a Baby Ace airplane. His grandchildren bonded with him as they helped to measure, sand, bend metal over the fuselage, and many other small projects.
Those who knew Jonathan would say he was sweet, funny, consistent, punctual, eager to please, creative, and intelligent. He loved his shop tools, woodworking, metal working, mechanics, writing, gardening, backpacking, fly fishing, fruit tree pruning, beekeeping, watching BBC dramas, languages, grammar, museums, and reading great literature. He wrote a fiction novel called, China Doll between 1990 to 1993, which his family published last year. Jon was a man of many interests, hobbies, and talents; to name his favorite would be difficult, but his top three interests are easier to list- reading, backpacking, and building his Baby Ace.
Editor: Jonathan was an active chapter 58 member for many years, flying Young Eagles, and serving in board positions. He was a consummate welder and did all the welding for the metal parts on my Cozy MKIV. He will be missed.

Mojave Airport Honors Rutan Name
In honor of the contributions to aerospace by Burt and Dick Rutan, the directors of California’s Mojave Air and Space Port (KMHV) have agreed to rename the facility Mojave Air and Space Port at Rutan Field. Burt Rutan established Rutan Aircraft factory at KMHV in the mid-1970s, when it was just a small general aviation airport. They started Scaled Composites there almost a decade later, helping propel it into a noted center of aerospace innovation.
A prolific designer with no fewer than 46 aircraft to his credit, Burt Rutan has received the Collier and National Air and Space Museum trophies for his work on historic aircraft such as Voyager, which his former Air Force pilot brother Dick copiloted in the first nonstop flight around the world, and SpaceShipOne, which became the first privately funded spacecraft to enter space.
Five of his designs—the above two plus the VariEze, the Quickie, and the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer, which was flown by the late adventurer Steve Fossett in the first solo nonstop circumnavigation of the Earth—are enshrined in the National Air & Space Museum in Washington, D.C.
According to the KMHV board, the Rutans' “aviation achievements have played a key role in the evolution of the aerospace industry and the success of the Mojave Air & Space Port organization.”
