Dear Holy Cross Families,

Today marks the beginning of the season of Lent, which lasts for forty days.  During Lent, we prepare our hearts for Holy Week, remembering Jesus’ suffering, death, and resurrection. For those of you who did not grow up Catholic in the U.S. or for those of you just getting to know the Catholic faith, here are a few things to know:

  • Ashes were distributed (placed on every person’s forehead) at Mass this morning for all teachers and students. Both Catholics and non-Catholics are encouraged to receive ashes as a sign of repentance.
  • We do not sing Alleluia at Mass during the forty days of Lent.
  • Catholics practice prayer, almsgiving, and fasting during Lent.
  • One traditional Lenten type of prayer is the Stations of the Cross which we will begin praying each Friday, with 8th grade students leading the prayer service.
  • Many people will “sacrifice” or “give up” something during Lent
  • Others will do something different each day of Lent rather than give up something...say more prayers, commit to going to daily Mass, etc.

Over the next few weeks our teachers will help Lent come to life for our students in the classroom.

Have a great week!

Queridas familias,

We have been blessed with the Notre Dame-South Bend Sant’Egidio community holding their monthly Prayer for Peace here in our Mary Chapel in the Father Jacob Smith, C.S.C., Parish Center. Our world is in desperate need of peace, which is not simply the absence of war but “the ordering of human nature according to the eternal law of God,” as explained in the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church… I have been impressed to see that the majority of those attending these monthly prayer services have been Holy Cross parishioners… It is a scripture-based prayer service with an insightful reflection offered by one of the Sant’Egidio leaders. I consider us very blessed to have this apostolate gathering at our parish for this prayer service, and hope that more parishioners will take advantage of such a unique opportunity right here in our parish center chapel. As Venerable Patrick Peyton, C.S.C., the famous rosary priest preached, “A world at prayer is a world at peace.” Let us earnestly pray that world leaders will pursue all avenues of peace for our troubled world.
Please help us clean up the lost and found items, stop in the school to see if your child lost any items, all remaining items will be donated on March 11th.
