This Tuesday's Generosity Idea
For your #GivingEveryTuesday challenge this week, and in honor of #InternationalWomensDay today, think about some ways you can take action to move the needle on gender equality.
By denying women equal rights, we deny half the population a chance to live life at its fullest. There has been some progress over the last decades: More girls are going to school, fewer girls are forced into early marriage, more women are serving in positions of leadership, and laws are being reformed to advance gender equality. However, COVID-19 threatens this progress. This past December, a study found that women accounted for nearly all of the job losses, with minority women being hit the hardest.
🗣️ Voice your support for equal pay for equal work.
👩 Be aware of gender stereotypes. Recognize them, avoid them and educate others about them.
♀️ Make women feel welcome in your home. Check out how @chrispetrone stocks his bathroom with supplies for people who mensturate:
🍽️ From setting the table to cooking, encourage children of all genders to be involved equally in household chores.
🏳️⚧️ Reject the binary: everyday language plays a huge role in breaking gender stereotypes (think “y’all” instead of “ladies and gentlemen”) and don’t assume you know someone’s pronouns
🤰 If you’re an employer make professional life easier for mothers: provide breastfeeding rooms, refrigerators for breast milk, flexible work hours, and quality and affordable childcare services in or near workplace premises
- Support organizations that are working on gender equality, women's rights, domestic violence organizations.
