We are so proud of all the fantastic opportunities our arts and cultural Partners offer to schools in Sheffield. Take a look at what is happening this half-term.

Create Sheffield Update

Launch of 3 new Sheffield Adventures with Children’s University

We are thrilled to become a validated Children’s University Learning Destination. This year children will be able to gain CU credits by taking part in our Sheffield Adventures!

This Easter, we are launching 3 newly commissioned Sheffield Adventures, as part of the Children’s University Passport Activity Newsletter.

Why does this matter? Sheffield Children's University has over 44,000 members who have collectively taken part in around 3 million hours of learning outside of normal school hours. Their data has shown that the children who participated make more progress in their learning at school, grow confidence, motivation, self-esteem, and the most importantly, have fun! Create Sheffield is proud to be a part of this initiative.

About the Adventures - Growtheatre, in partnership with the Sheffield General Cemetery, Emily Whiteley from In-between the Trees and Terezia Rostas from Care for Young People’s Future received commissions to create new Sheffield Adventures, which they wrote and tested with children and young people in the city last summer.

• Growtheatre’s Cemetery Trail ‘The Show Must Go On!’ reveals the stories of some of the different performers who are buried at the Sheffield General Cemetery.

• In-between the Trees invite you to take part in their ‘Sensory Circuits,’ encouraging a sense of wellbeing, and written with special educational needs in mind.

• Care for Young People’s Future wants you to share what YOU think makes Sheffield so fun and adventurous in a Sheffield ‘Adventure Suitcase’.

Special School Creative Community of Practice

The Special School Creative Community is researching the value of creativity for children and young people with special needs. The group will be running two CPD workshops in the Spring Term. There are a limited number of free places available for Partners and special school staff. Email Matt Laurie to register.

• Spray Paint Pictures - Tuesday 15th March 4pm - 5.45pm at Seven Hills School. Arts Specialist Claire Lount will introduce the process of making Spray Paint Pictures, an inclusive activity for children and young people with special needs. All workshop participants will have the opportunity to create their own picture, reflect on the process and leave with an activity that they can use in their class or practice.

• Sensory Circuits in Nature - Thursday 28th April at Bents Green School. The second session will be led By Emily Whiteley, an arts specialist who works at Bents Green School. This session will introduce Sensory Circuits, a wellbeing activity themed around three themes of activity, Alerting, Calming and Organising. Participants will be led through the process and will leave with a set of activities that they can use in their class or practice.

New Arts & Cultural Partners

Sheffield Mencap & Gateway

Our Partners at Sheffield Mencap & Gateway are the leading provider of training & support for people with learning disabilities in Sheffield.

Children aged 6 – 17 with a learning disability or autism may like to try out some of the creative groups they offer on Saturdays from 10am – 12pm:

Communicate, ages 6 – 12 Split into two groups ‘Acorns’ for children with limited/no verbal communication and ‘Oaks’ for more verbal children, Communicate supports children to develop their own communication, emotional regulation and social interaction. The group focusses on art and craft activities, with lots of games.

Soundbites, ages 12 – 17 Children can research topics of interest and record and edit audio, learning to use the equipment and software that you need for radio/podcast broadcasting. Children enjoy conducting interviews, recording songs and storytelling.

Shine Out on Saturday (SOS), ages 6 – 17 A fun, energetic group where children can try out lots of different visual and performing arts including music, poetry, drama, comedy, puppetry, set design and costume.

University of Sheffield Performance Venues

We are delighted to introduce our newest Partners, UoS Performance Venues, home to musical discovery, learning, and participation. Combining eclectic programming, internationally renowned performers, and creative learning opportunities for schools & young people.

Messages from our Arts and Cultural Partners

Levelling up Futures in Sheffield

We are calling on employers across the city to pledge your support and to help us deliver 8 opportunities to 17 schools across Sheffield. We working with 11 to 18-years-old’s, particularly those hardest hit by the pandemic, to ensure they have the same opportunities and life chances as their peers. Support may include mock interviews, talks, cv writing, mentoring. Pledge your support.

Concerteenies

Concerteenies has launched a new series of Relaxation Concerts for pre-crawling babies and their grown-ups on Monday mornings at Whirlow Spirituality Centre. The concerts showcase professional musicians performing classical, folk, world, pop, nursery rhymes and more, and aim to revitalise and entertain grown-ups as well as give your babies a new musical experience. Sensory elements include bubbles, scarves, feathers and simple baby massage techniques for you to explore with your little one at your own pace. Concerteenies is partnering with the University of Leeds to evaluate the impact of our Relaxation Concerts. As a result of this partnership, we’re able to offer a 25% discount on 5 adult tickets per concert. We are looking for adults who are willing to participate in data collection, which may involve being included in observations, completing some questionnaires, or talking to a research team member. We encourage you to attend all six concerts and take part in the research, but this is not obligatory. If you or anyone you know might be interested in receiving the discount, please email Karen Burland stating how many tickets you would like and which dates and times you would like to attend as soon as possible. We will then send you the discount code to use when booking your tickets.

My Arty Party

Part-time Freelance, Children’s Arts and Crafts Coordinator Call, £15 per hour plus 30 pence a mile traveling expenses. We are looking for enthusiastic, caring, smiley individuals to join our team on a freelance basis to deliver children’s arts and crafts with us. You will love kids, crafts, sunshine and the satisfaction of providing a great service!

Creative DJ School

Creative DJ School offer DJ taster sessions or short courses in DJ techniques and Music Production. We aim to create fun and engaging experiences designed to suit all abilities!

Emergency Services Museum

15th, 16th, 17th and 18th April 2022

Come face to face with real life superheroes from every day emergency services to superheroes of the sky, water and of the animal world. Jump on board our fire engine and discover what it would be like rushing to an incident.

MakerFutures

Maker{Move} brings all of the resources and materials to you, providing workshops in which children can design and make a range of objects, and engage in STEAM challenges (integrating science, technology, engineering and mathematics with the arts). The process of creating, tinkering, testing and modifying allows children to develop the skills they need to solve complex problems.

Amazelab

We've so much happening at Amazelab for you all to get involved in!

• Join our monthly STEAM Club on the first Sunday of every month 10-11am at Cutlery Works, Kelham Island, Sheffield, aimed at 5-11 year olds

• Amazelab after school club on the second Wednesday of every month 5-6pm, aimed at 5-11 year olds at Cutlery Works, Kelham Island, Sheffield

• School holiday workshops - every school holiday, aimed at 5-11 year olds, Cutlery Works, Kelham Island, Sheffield

• Preschool workshops every Thursday for all preschool aged children and their adults 11am-12noon at Cutlery Works, Kelham Island, Sheffield.

Sheffield Music Academy

Is your child an outstanding and passionate young musician that would benefit from professional tuition, specialist classes, and over 40 excellent performance opportunities a year?

Sheffield Music Academy are holding auditions throughout March and April 2022 for inspiring musicians aged 8+, and are holding open days on the 12th March (Grades 1-5) and 19th March (Grade 6-Diploma) at our teaching premises at Birkdale School. IVE

Thinking further – Post-pandemic mental health and wellbeing. 30th March 4:00 - 5:30pm. An online, interactive workshop on how to re-think the relationship between learning and wellbeing for young people. Suitable for: Teachers, educators, arts & cultural organisations and creative practitioners in Yorkshire and the Humber.

Funding for schools: Communicating the impact of creative work in schools. 30th March 3:45- 5:15pm. An online session exploring how you can communicate the impact of creative work in schools. Suitable for: School teachers, headteachers and creative & cultural practitioners who work with schools in the Yorkshire and Humber region.

Resources & Inspiration

• The South Yorkshire Schools Climate (virtual) Conference is taking place March 1-3. In addition to the Conference, they are bringing together a network of schools seeking to include climate education in their curriculum and reduce their school's impact on the environment. Get in contact with Schools Climate Education South Yorkshire if you think you can support this curriculum or any future activities.

• Place-Based Approaches: Characteristics & Learning. A New Direction have released two new papers which build a collection of place-based intelligence, focused on learning beyond the arts.

• Intro Games Career Festival 2022 is a four-day event jam-packed full of support and content to help you get hired in the Games Industry! The event will take place from Wednesday 9th March until Saturday 12th March.
