March 10th is World Kidney Day

World Kidney Day is Thursday, March 10. People facing kidney disease, their caregivers, family members and medical professionals around the globe are using the day to bring attention to kidney health.

The theme for 2022 is “Kidney Health for All,” with a focus on bridging the gap in kidney health education and literacy.
Kidney diseases affect people of all ages and races.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is common and harmful: 1 out of 10 adult people worldwide have it, and if left untreated it can be deadly.
Early detection allows for disease care to help prevent health complications and death. However, kidney disease deaths continue to increase each year. Kidney diseases are projected to be the fifth leading cause of death by 2040.
The World Kidney Day Joint Steering Committee calls for everyone worldwide to not only be aware of the disease, but to actively know their own kidney health measures, such as blood pressure and treatment objectives.
Western New York landmarks will be illuminated yellow and blue for kidney health on Thursday, March 10. Niagara Falls will be lit up in yellow and blue for 15 minutes starting at 10 p.m. Anyone wishing to observe the falls from the park must follow public health guidelines.

The City of Jamestown will also light its Municipal Building that evening.

Waiting for a Kidney

Jordan Crowley is hoping for a living kidney donor. Jordan is a 23-year-old college student from Elma. He plans to graduate with a Bachelor’s in Psychology this May.

At his birth, Jordan had just one partially functioning kidney which had cysts on it. Over the years, his kidney function has decreased, causing additional health problems.
“I am hoping to find a live donor before I have to go on dialysis,” Jordan said.

Jordan is outgoing and enthusiastic. Among his favorite activities are cooking and baking, swimming, and playing games with his family.

Medical volunteers included members of Buffalo Black Nurses, members of Iota Eta Eta of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, and other nursing professionals.
