March is National Women's History Month

The City Council has passed a resolution honoring Women’s History Month. The resolution:
  • Observes that Women’s History Month promotes equality and celebrates women’s roles in history and society.
  • Celebrates International Women’s Day with the theme “break the bias,” which imagines a gender-equal world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination.
  • Acknowledges that the women’s movement has historically left out Black women, Indigenous women, transgender women and women of color and chooses to reflect on these movements and challenge the narrative going forward.

City Council’s Committee of the Whole Briefed on After-Action Review of City’s Response to Civil Unrest following George Floyd’s Murder

Hillard Heintze, a security risk management firm, presented key findings and recommendations of an after-action review of the City’s response to civil unrest following the murder of George Floyd to the City Council’s Committee of the Whole March 8.

The analysis focuses on the City’s actions immediately following Floyd’s murder from May 25 to June 3, 2020. The unrest came as the City was also navigating the early stages of the pandemic and transitioning to a remote work environment.

Behavioral Crisis Response teams now operating 24 hours a day, Monday-Friday

The City’s Behavioral Crisis Response teams are now operating 24 hours a day, Monday through Friday. The teams are part of a pilot project led by the City’s Office of Performance and Innovation with Canopy Roots serving as the provider.

Two mobile units operate throughout Minneapolis. Each has a team of two behavioral health responders and outreach supplies, such as water, socks, snacks and toiletries. Minneapolis 911 dispatches the responders.

People having a behavioral crisis, or reporting one, should continue to call 911 for help. 911 dispatchers will gather information and determine if the incident is eligible for a mobile behavioral health team response. The teams will not respond to incidents involving firearms or violent behavior.

De-escalation Training for Community Members

The Office of Violence Prevention is offering to host a de-escalation training community members in Ward 5. This specific training is targeted to build skills around the prevention of and intervention in mental health crisis and wellness recovery. The training will be put on by the Barbara Schneider Foundation and features scenario-based actors who bring the trainings to life.

The training is a total of six hours and is covered over a period of two days (3 hours each day). The Barbara Schneider Foundation has many years’ experience training on mental health crisis response for first responders, law enforcement, social service providers, health care systems, and others. A training must have between 12-25 community members in order to be effective.
