An ecocultural consideration of Sámi early childhood education
European Journal of Education Studies, 31 January 2022
This study examines early childhood education for the Sámi people—the EU's only Indigenous people, who live in the Nordic countries' Arctic region and in Russia. It describes Sámi ECE using an eco-cultural point of view and Sámi early childhood educators' narratives. The authors illustrate how Sámi educators' actions connect to their Indigenous culture and its inherent focus on and respect for nature. Findings suggest that the recurring theme of nature provides a ground for culturally sustainable ECEC that is rooted in land learning and strong relationships with nature.

The role of the early childhood educator in British Columbia

In light of a new Early Childhood Educator Act, this paper envisions the roles of early childhood educators in BC. It is oriented to educators' engagement in ethical, transformative pedagogical practice. Awakening Indigenous knowledge: Perspectives and experiences of Indigenous early childhood education diploma students
McGill Journal of Education, 15 February 2022

It notes they felt they brought limited knowledge of their Indigenous language and culture to their program and experienced an awakening of Indigenous knowledge through participation in Indigenous practices outside the core curriculum. The authors argue for Indigenous community-generated curricula that embody local Indigenous cultural knowledge, values, and practices, as an important contribution to Indigenous cultural revitalization.

Defining and measuring access to child care and early education with families in mind
US Department of Health & Human Services, 8 February 2022
This research uses a multi-dimensional access framework and data from the 2012 National Study of Early Care and Education (NSECE) to model the complexity of access to early childhood education and care families across the United States. The analysis of each access dimension (overall availability, affordability, child development support, meeting families’ needs) indicates that child care access needs to be assessed by policymakers in all dimensions and requires tailored solutions dependent on families’ needs and preferences.
