Update from the Reopening Team 3.1.22

Woodlawn Reopening Team: Masks Optional

Woodlawn’s Reopening Team met Monday and reviewed the Centers for Disease Control new mask guidance. The CDC’s new system classifies counties as being low, medium, or high risk, based on such data as hospital beds being used, hospital admissions, and total number of new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people. Currently Sedgwick County’s risk is “medium,” which means the CDC no longer suggests that masks must be worn indoors, either by vaccinated or unvaccinated persons.

In light of the CDC’s new stance, the Reopening Team will no longer require masks to be worn inside Woodlawn’s building. Health officials emphasize that people should still wear face coverings if they wish or if they are personally at high risk and that regardless of local conditions, anyone should mask who has COVID-19 symptoms, a positive test, or has been exposed to someone with COVID-19.

Beginning this Sunday, Woodlawn will once again pass offering plates in worship, and the congregation will be invited forward to receive communion from servers.  Signs stating masks are required are being taken down, and designated seating signs in the sanctuary will be removed.

Each of these steps to loosen restrictions is possible because of the significant improvement locally in new case rates, hospitalizations and positivity test rates.  It is hoped that we will enjoy these restored freedoms while the infection risk remains low.

Moving forward, the Woodlawn Reopening Committee will factor in the CDC’s new guidelines for assessing community risk. The new guidelines weigh hospitalizations for COVID-19 and the proportion of beds occupied by COVID-19 patients in local hospitals more heavily than rates of new infections alone.

Sincerely,

Woodlawn UMC Reopening Team

The Grace of Les Miserables
This Sunday we introduce our Lenten Worship and Lenten Study theme: The Grace of Les Miserables.  I plan to outline the plot and themes of the story, originally a classic French novel by Victor Hugo which was made into a very popular stage and screen musical.
I’d encourage you to watch the 2012 film of Les Miserables if you can. You can find it streaming on Netflix presently and available for purchase or rental from other streaming services.  If you cannot find it, please let Rev. Lori or I know, and we’ll help you find a way to watch it.

Each week Rev. Lori will lead the study at 11 am following worship services. The study is also being used in some of our adult Sunday School classes.

Lent is a time of self-examination, self-denial, and spiritual discipline.  I encourage you to be in worship each Sunday between now and Easter and to engage the special church-wide Lenten study as a means of preparing for the events of Holy Week and our Lord’s death and resurrection.

Until Sunday,

Yesterday was Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of the Lenten season. Lent is a time of reflection. Often for Lent, people will “give up” something in their lives or sometimes others will add in spiritual practice to enrich their lives as they prepare for Easter.

My practice is when I “give something up” for Lent, I always have a good thing I want to put in its place. For example- I see many people post on Facebook that they are giving up social media for Lent. I offer the reflection of what will you add in? Perhaps it is just the mental space for your brain to breathe. Perhaps the time you would be on social media you are adding in a devotion or prayer time. Something to think about as we start our journey into Lent.

If you are looking for a spiritual practice to add to your life this Lent, I encourage you to join one of our Lenten studies or small groups. We have The Grace of Les Miserables starting THIS Sunday at 11am in the Parlor, Lent in Plain Sight on Wednesdays at 6pm, and the Pastor’s Brown Bag study, while not Lent focused, will meet Wednesdays at noon via Zoom.

Here is an excerpt from our “Lent in Plain Sight” book by Jill J. Duffield

“God works through the ordinary. Ordinary people, everyday objects, things we bump up against moment by moment. From burning bushes to talking donkeys to a booming voice from heaven, God goes to great lengths to communicate with people, sending Jesus Christ, God’s only Son to unmistakably tell human  beings about salvation, grace and reconciliation. People of faith report epiphanies, revelations of God’s word to them, sometimes by way of miraculous interventions or otherwise by inexplicable happenings, but often and also through the mundane made holy due to timing and perception. The note from a friend arrived with the right words, just when encouragement seemed utterly absent. A deer appeared as if out of nowhere after a voice prayed for a sign. Often it is in hindsight that God’s providence becomes recognizable and events previously considered mundane become evidence of God’s presence and work in our lives. The question becomes: Do we have the eyes to see God’s near presence?”

A Word From Our Youth Director

It’s hard to believe that spring break is almost here.  Yet, here we are – just a little over a week out from the much needed rest and recovery offered by spring break.  For many, this means vacation – perhaps a brief trip to a familiar destination.  For others, it may be a glorious week of rest and sleeping in.  Others may find themselves looking for something to do to pass the time.

Each year, we offer a variety of fun spring break events for our youth to gather in fellowship, have fun, and find something to do during this week off from school.  This year, our events include a trip to Urban Air Trampoline Park, serving at the Kansas Food Bank, having a bonfire, and escaping from Area 51 at The Room.  What an amazing week this is going to be, as our youth connect with each other at each of these activities.  Want to find out more?  Check out the information for our spring break week and register here!

Thanks,

Bryce Fuhrmann
Youth Director

Page-turners are exciting books, the kind you don’t want to put down, the kind you would stay up extra late to read. Books are exciting when we can find ourselves in the stories and imagine being a part of the adventure. This month we are going to look at some of the page-turning stories of the Bible. Each of these stories has something valuable to teach us about our patient and powerful God who prepares us to fight temptation and celebrates us, the heroes in our own real-life adventures!
Join us on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings as we look into some of the page-turning stories of the Bible.

With our attendance on Sunday mornings picking up, I would love to separate our kids back into age groups. But to do that I need help! Would you consider volunteering one or more Sunday mornings a month? Ideally we will have Kindergarten through 2nd grade, 3rd Grade (Bible Boot Camp), and Club 45 back on Sunday mornings. I will need 2 more volunteers each Sunday morning to make that happen. This will benefit the kids greatly as they move into deeper conversations about where they are in their own lives without fearing what the older or younger children around them might think.

See you soon!

Have you recently lost a drag-race to a Tesla?  Do you think Elon Musk is a visionary or a con-man?  For some opinions and answers bring  your ideas and appetite to the Thursday Men’s Breakfast and Book Study at 7 AM, starting again on March 17. The book is “Ludicrous: The Unvarnished Story of Tesla Motors.” We conclude each time by 8:00 AM.

Food service at WUMC was recently approved by the Re-Opening Committee, but watch this space in the weeks ahead, as the virus is unpredictable. Call the office at 788-1507 or Frank O’Donnell at 788-3224 for the latest word.
Stephen Ministers are here to help

Grieving the loss of a loved one is difficult under any circumstances, but the effects of the ongoing coronavirus crisis have made grief even harder for many. Family members may have been isolated from their loved one and not had the chance for closure or saying their final goodbyes. If you are suffering a loss and are having difficulty coping with feelings and living without them, please allow a Stephen Minister to help carry this burden. You do not have to travel this difficult time alone. Call Kelly Gifford-316 708 0691 to be matched with a Stephen Minister.
USD 260 Food Drive - Need for Volunteers

USD 260 is having a food drive this week to benefit the Food Pantry. They could use volunteers at the Food Pantry (4900 S Clifton - east side of Oaklawn Activity Center) on Sat March 5th between 9-4 and Sun March 6th from 1pm-4pm to help mark and sort all the food.  Any questions, call Colene Read at 204-4148.
The Children of Angel House Thank You

The board of Grassroots and the children of Angel House want to thank Woodlawn UMC for the gift of $5,450 they received from donations throughout the year 2021 with this note,

Merry Christmas to you and your family! It has been a wonderful year in many ways and we are so grateful for our new child sponsors, and for God working through you to finish the kitchen facilities at the secondary school, for being able to pay off the tractor, and start construction on the new early childhood classrooms. In fact, we are just shy of the goal we'd set to provide classroom furniture for the preschool and kindergarten rooms. It is AMAZING to watch God work in and through the lives of the children and see how He provides for them through our dear friends and family.

We are so thankful for all that God is doing in and through us.

Thank you once again for your partnership in this mission

Joys, Prayers, and Concerns

Sharene Oldham would like to thank Woodlawn United Methodist Church and the Care Unit Team for your words of encouragement and support for her daughter, Sarah, and for herself as well. Sharene will be traveling on March 5th to Portland, OR and will stay as long as necessary. Sarah will have surgery on March 10th.  The doctor said it will be a 6 hour surgery for her thyroidectomy, and will have a radioactive ablation sometime after the surgery. Your prayers are greatly appreciated.

Our condolences go out to Milton and Eugenia Moore this week as they are grieving the loss of Milton’s son, Milton “Bud” Moore, Jr. of Medicine Lodge, KS. Bud passed away last week. Services were held Wednesday, March 2nd at 2:00 PM at the First Christian Church (300 S Main St, Medicine Lodge, KS 67104). Please keep the Moore family in your prayers.

Our condolences go out to Frank & Sally O’Donnell. Frank’s sister, Marie Twitchell, of McPherson passed away February 27. Please keep Frank and Sally, as well as Marie’s family, in your prayers.

Tammy Cuadra has requested prayers for her nephew Ian and family, Ryan & Ellen, in Tucson, AZ. Ian is transitioning to a new residential treatment facility in San Marco, TX and they fly out March 3rd. The opening at the treatment facility is the answer to prayers for the past six months. Tammy has also requested prayers for preparations and traveling mercies for a friend coming from Mexico to Wichita this week.

Crystal Vines asks your prayers through our website for sleep at night and for her finances.

Marcy Cone asks prayers for her brother, Greg Mugler. He lives in Oxford. He has cancer, and the treatment isn’t working, so they are upping the dosage. Please lift prayers for a successful treatment and for healing.

William Skasick asks for your prayers through our website for an extremely bad GERD LPR Reflux Disorder flare-up. He can barely eat anything at all and is experiencing intense pain.  Please pray for healing.

Our condolences go out to the family of Jim Wohlwend on his death this past Monday, Feb. 28. Please keep the Wohlwend family in your prayers of comfort and peace. Cards can be sent to the Wohlwend family at 3132 NE 91st Pl. Kansas City MO 64156-1030

If you, or someone you know, has a joy, a concern, or just needs prayers, send to main@woodlawnumc.net or call the church office at 788-1507.
