U.S. 17th Airborne Division, WWII
The mission of the "Scions of the 17th Airborne" is to honor the service of all veterans of the 17th, and to educate others about the history and sacrifices made by the troopers who served in this division during WWII.

We strive to accomplish these missions by holding regional gatherings where troopers and their families can gather, and by sharing their recollections.  We communicate with our membership using this "Thunder From Heaven" newsletter, through our website, and on our Facebook page. Additionally, we collect documents related to the history of the 17th and make them available to our membership.

Message from outgoing President Jeff Schumacher
and incoming President Skip Greeby

Greetings, fellow Scions!

The last few months and weeks seem to have been filled with beehive-like activity. In late October/early November, we were finally able to launch our "2020" ETO Trip, followed closely by Veterans Day observances, the holidays and a focused effort to see a monument to the 17th Airborne Division erected in Wesel, Germany and dedicated in March, and most recently our successful Reunion and Annual Meeting in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in early April.  I don’t mind telling you that in hindsight, it has been a blur.  At times, one has to simply pause, drink it in and savor the experience of the moment.

None of these things, as well as many other activities and endeavors, would have been possible without the strong support of countless helping hands here and abroad. So many friends and so much support…it is humbling. Experiencing these events in person continues to bring home the story of the men of the 17th Airborne, and those they liberated, in a way that is almost beyond description. Similar to our fathers, uncles, grandfathers telling us "you had to be there to understand," such is the case with these trips and gatherings. To reflect on the events of 77 years ago, to listen to a veteran tell a story or two, to meet other families of 17th veterans and learn about their heroes…these are among the many ways we keep them with us and their legacy alive and well. And – brace yourself – it is up to us to continue this mission. You, me, all of us. Each and every story from a veteran, family member, or friend of the 17th Airborne matters. Also, not every story is a war story.  The lives of these men are filled with families, careers, experiences and testaments to their special character that we relish to learn and share.

Our mission continues, and our organization evolves. To that end, this is my message of gratitude to all of you that demonstrate your passion for and support of the Scions of the 17th Airborne Division, and to welcome the latest change in leadership of our organization. At our annual meeting in Lancaster, we welcomed Skip Greeby as our new President, Jerry O’Brien as Vice President (and President-elect), and the re-election of Ed Siergiej as Secretary, and Dan Aas as Treasurer. With sincerest thanks for the support I have enjoyed as your President the last two years, please join me in congratulating these Scions as your current officers. They will need and appreciate your support as we all march on to honor the lives and legacy of all 17th Airborne soldiers and veterans.

Please accept my challenge to pledge your support to the next level. It is a noble endeavor, and as the old proverb goes, “many hands make work light.”  Our organization needs and our soldiers and veterans deserve nothing less than our best as we continue our work!

With that, I’ll say “Thank You” for your continued support and your passion for the 17th Airborne Division…truly representative of the Greatest Generation. `They pass the baton to us and the generations that follow to wisely use what they have taught us.

Take it away, Skip!

Airborne…
Jeff

With the peaceful transfer of the Presidency from Jeff to me at our annual reunion in Lancaster April 8-11, 2022, it will be my honor and with much enthusiasm to build upon the organizational structure that Jeff built during his 2020-2022 presidency. Specially, our focus going forward will be to increase our membership, necessary for new ideas and the continuance of the 17th’s legacy. Volunteerism is at the heart of any organization, and yours is especially required for membership and on any of our existing and to-be formed committees: Membership, Memorial, Finance, History & Archives, Marketing, and Meetings & Events. Please raise your hand to join one of these committees — we need you!

As already mentioned, our meeting this year in Lancaster was a great success. With well over 40 Scions and friends attending, to include two veterans (Ray Brown and Richard Weaver), meeting events included TV coverage, a memorial service organized by Ed Siergiej, a 17th Airborne history presentation by David Shortt, an ETO trip briefing slideshow by Jeff Schumacher and video by Michael Siergiej, and an open-mic session with Ray Brown. All of this was coupled with Scions comradery, shared stories, and the renewal of old and making of new friends. If you missed the meeting this year, do plan to attend next year.

Joan and I send our very best to you and yours for continued good health this year, and for the continuing success and growth of the Scions of the 17th Airborne Division.

President, Scions of the 17th Airborne Division
Scions Annual Meeting in Lancaster, PA

Our Annual Meeting, held in Lancaster, PA from April 8 to 11 was a great success. The gathering was attended by Troopers Richard Weaver (Division HQ) and Ray Brown(193/A and 194/B) and over 40 members of our organization.

Highlights included
a brief on our recently completed trip to the ETO with veterans Herrera and Weaver, attending veterans open mic session, our annual general membership meeting, a PowerPoint presentation on the history of the 17th Airborne, and jump qualification for our new members.

Megan Magensky, a reporter for CBS 21 interviewed our veterans as well as her grandfather, Trooper Paul Baker. Her report is posted on our Facebook page. Many thanks, Megan for honoring our Troopers with your wonderful reporting.

At our business meeting we elected Scion Jerry O'Brien as our new Vice President. Skip Greeby, our former VP will assume the office of President. Former President Jeff Schumacher will now lead our Advisory Committee. Treasurer Dan Aas and Secretary Ed Siergiej were re elected to their positions.

On Sunday, we held our annual Memorial Service to honor the men of the 17th who were lost in battle, as well as those troopers whom we have lost in the past year. Associate Members Neil, Amanda and Jack Baughman attended and were of great help. Neil brought his great display of WWII Airborne Equipment. Neil and Jack led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance and Amanda brought more than a few tears to our eyes as she played TAPS and "Amazing Grace" at the Memorial Service.

Reading, PA WWII Weekend
June 3,4,5, 2022

As you know, the Scions attended this event last year as part of our annual
Reunion. It is a once in lifetime event. WWII Warbirds, re-enactors, live WWII Veteran speakers, and more! This year it will not be hosted by the Scions, rather a come as you are/come when you can event. We will include the website for the event where you can pre-order tickets, or buy them at the door. It also lists the local hotels, should you need one. We will have a vendor table representing the 17th Airborne Division to pass out literature, educate the public and hopefully recruit some new members. If you are interested in helping out at the table, or attending this event, check out

Saving our History #37

Hello, Troopers and SCIONS! This month we will be highlighting LOIS YOUNG and his service as a Parachute Field Artilleryman.

Young was born in 1916 in the Western United States. He entered the US Army in 1943 and after volunteering for and completing parachute training at Ft. Benning, GA, was assigned to the 464th Parachute Field Artillery (PFA) Battalion at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina.

While the 17th had sailed to England in late summer 1944, Young and his comrades continued to train on their 75mm pack howitzers and .50 cal. heavy machine guns assigned to the 464th PFA. In late December, 1944, in response to the "Battle of the Bulge", the German attack in the Belgian Ardennes, the 17th was alerted and flown to France, for attachment to the Third US Army and eventual combat.

The 464th PFA shipped overseas and arrived in France in January 1945, and after initial assignment to the 13th Airborne Division was attached on 1 March, 1945 to the 17th Airborne Division, where it was further assigned to the 507th Parachute Infantry Regimental Combat Team for Operation "Varsity." By all accounts, LTC Branigan of the 464th and Col Raff, 507th Commander, worked well together to ensure that artillery support would be provided to the Parachute Infantrymen of the 507th.

On 24 March 1945, the 507th CT was the first unit of the 17th Airborne Division to land on German soil, near Fluren (northwest of Wesel). While some elements of the 507th overshot DZ "W" by over a mile, landing near the Dierfordt Castle (an objective), most landed on the DZ, including elements of the 17th Airborne Division Headquarters with Major General Bud Miley, followed by the 464th PFA.

Young and the Artillery Troopers immediately went into action, acting as Infantry when necessary and fighting for and neutralizing German strong points and defenses, all while attempting to locate, gather and assemble their pack howitzers, which had been broken down into multiple components for parachuting them into combat. (Incidentally, this was the first parachute drop of pack howitzers during the war, so the 464th and 466th PFA's made Airborne History).

The 464th air dropped 12 pack howitzers and by the end of the day, had most in firing order by nightfall; there are multiple reports of the pack howitzers dueling with German artillery pieces, and defeating them. After "VE" Day, the 464th PFA participated in Allied Military Government duties until sailing to the US in August 1945, for deactivation. Young was slightly wounded in action during the invasion but stayed with the 17th until being transferred to the 82nd Airborne Division for Berlin Occupation Duty. After WWII Young lived in Arizona, until his death in 1982.

Young's dress uniform on display at the Veterans Memorial Museum Foundation, shows some insignia specific to the members of the 464th PFA. Many units displayed background ovals behind their Parachute and Glider Badges, which immediately identified the wearer as belonging to that specific formation (some units did not wear them). The 464th PFA oval was a red field surrounded by a yellow trim. The Overseas hat parachute roundel, used by the 464th PFA, used the same colors of red and yellow, but also displayed a white embroidered parachute. Lastly as pictured in one of the photographs of Young's "Ike" Jacket collars, the 464th PFA displayed their Distinctive Unit Insignia, which consisted of a red, yellow and blue shield with a diving eagle clutching a firing cannon.

Young's 17th Airborne Division sleeve insignia displays a variant with the claws, hood and bottom of the Airborne Tab embroidered off-red. Purportedly, some members of the 17th Airborne Division had their patches modified in this way to represent a "blooding." Lastly, Young's "Ike" Jacket sleeves also display an unusual German embroidered Sergeant's chevrons.

WWII paratroopers were not only enduring comrades who were dependable in combat, but also were cocky and confident in garrison. They prided themselves on their training, performance and unit history. To show off their special training and status, they wore eye catching accouterments on their uniforms, as evidenced here by Young.

Please Help Us to Keep Tabs on Our Veterans

Time is taking its toll on our 17th Airborne veterans. Each month, we send a hard copy of this newsletter to over fifty 17th veterans, but every month we get some back notifying us that the address is no longer current. Sometimes they have relocated to be closer to family, or to a nursing facility. We do our best to track them down, but it can be challenging and time-consuming.

We are asking for your help. If you are aware of one of our veterans who has moved, please let us know by emailing us at Scionsofthe17thairborne@gmail.com

If you become aware that one of our veterans has passed away, we would ask you to notify us immediately at Scionsofthe17thairborne@gmail.com. Our Veterans Outreach Team will work to arrange to ship our replica  of the Division Flag to the Memorial Service, and also to arrange for one of our members to attend if at all possible. The sooner that we know of a veterans passing the better. Thank you for your help in honoring our honored Troopers.
Please take some time to reach out to these
17th Airborne Veterans

By Ed Siergiej Jr, Secretary

Our Veterans outreach team has been sending cards to the forty six 17th Airborne veterans for whom we have contact information, as well as to some of the widows of our troopers. The current health crisis has had a tough impact on many of our veterans, who in some cases are not allowed to leave their homes, or even rooms. As tough as it is for all of us, it is much harder for our veterans. The following veterans have specifically reached out to ask us to share their contact information.

A call from you would make a great difference in their lives right now.

Additionally, we would like to find volunteers to stay in contact with our remaining veterans on a regular basis. In some cases they have moved, or are having health issues, and we are not notified in time to be of some comfort. If you are willing to be a part of this effort, please contact us at Scionsofthe17thairborne@gmail.com and we will pass on a few of their names to you. Remember how much we owe them!

Thunder Mail Call

For many years, Trooper Bill Tom (194/C) was a major contributor to the original hard copy newsletter of the 17th Airborne Division Association, "Thunder From Heaven." After the dissolution of the Association in 2007, Bill began an email version of the newsletter, and continued that publication, "Thunder Mail Call" until the formation of the Scions Organization in 2011. With Bill's help, we integrated his newsletter into this publication. We were saddened to hear of Bills passing on September 10, 2019. We dedicate this portion of our newsletter to Bill.

Photos Needed for Troopers at
Cambridge American Cemetery

The Cambridge American Cemetery in the UK is the resting place for a number of 17th Airborne Troopers who died while the division was in the final stages of training. Three of the troopers listed below were killed in the crash of a Horsa Glider at Greenham Common airfield on December 12, 1944.

There is an effort to obtain photographs of the following Troopers so that every grave will have a photograph associated with it. This project is similar to the "Faces of Margraten" project at Margraten Cemetery in the Netherlands. If anyone has a photo of the following troopers, please forward it to us at Scionsofthe17thairborne@gmail.com and we will get the photo to those who are coordinating the project.

Thanks for your help in honoring these brave Troopers:

Peggy Ingram, widow of James Ingram (194/D)  sent us these photos of her husband, taken in Switzerland, after the end of the war. Her letter is below:

I recently came across these photos of my late husband, Dr. James Ingram which I know were taken during R&R in Switzerland in 1945. Jim is the man in the top left photo and also the man on the left in the top right photo. I have no idea who the other man is, but perhaps one of the remaining living veterans or his progeny will recognize him.

Jim was in the 194th Glider Infantry, and after the war worked for a while at Brush Creek Ranch in Saratoga, Wyoming, which was instrumental in his deciding to become a veterinarian. After being in private practice for 5 years in Saratoga, he was asked to come on the faculty at Colorado State University where he had a distinguished career, first as a large animal surgeon and then developing the veterinary neurology department at CSU, and finally a professor emeritus. He died at age 94 in May, 2019. His time spent in the 17th Airborne Division played a tremendous part of the man he was.

Editors note: This book gives a great insight into what was going through the mind of one trooper in the 17th during training, combat, and after the end of the fighting in the ETO. Information from the division historical record gives context to the bigger picture that was unknown to the men in the front lines. A great book for anyone who wants to know more about what it was like to be "Airborne" in 1944 - 45. Thanks to Scion John Ogden for making this limited edition book available.  (Ed Siergiej Jr.)

IN MEMORY OF THE FALLEN SOLDIER
by Isaac Epps (RIP)

   The ones who went
   Were truly sent
   To do a Noble Deed;
   When evil showed
   They took the load
   In Justice, they believed.
   They heard the call
   And gave their All
And some did not not come back.
   They knew the chance

   But took the stance
   When Liberty was attacked.
   It Speaks of Duty, Faith; and Love;
   It speaks of a respect
   for Country; For Others,
   For the Right of Man;
   To forget would be neglect.
   On this Their Day

   We stop to pray
   Their Memory shall live;
The sacrifice they made was Life.
   What more can someone Give?

Edward Pawlowski passed away at 9:00AM on February 18, 2022 at his adult family home, Cherished Acres, in Auburn, WA. He was 98 years old.

Ed was born in a home in Cleveland, Ohio, on August 15, 1923 to Polish immigrants, Alexander and Emilia Pawlowski. He was the 4th of 8 children. Through his early years he was a golf caddie, and a foundry worker.

In 1943, he was drafted and joined the 17th Airborne Division , 194th Regiment. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and earned 3 Bronze Stars as well as other distinguished honors. While his service ended in 1945, his love of country and freedom was something he carried with him for the rest of his life. He was a hero - the type who defined the Greatest Generation. Later in life he spent many years volunteering at the National Cemetery honoring fellow veterans.

After earning a degree in Metallurgical Engineering he worked most of career at Boeing - the job which brought him, and his wife (our Mom) Billie, to Seattle where they raised a family. He pursued his hobbies - gardening, golf, coaching baseball, tutoring ESL students and fishing. He will be long remembered for his huge rose garden of which he took meticulous care of and gave from it generously to anyone who drove by (unless there was a rose show the next weekend).

He was a man of deep faith - and was devoted as a parishioner and a volunteer at church for as long as he was able. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus
