In March, the UPU is focusing on gender equality initiatives across the sector. UPU’s Postal Regulation and UN Policies Programme Manager Susan Alexander spoke to UPU News about the importance of the Post in fostering gender equality and how UPU is driving these initiatives forward.

To celebrate International Women’s Day 2022 “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”, the UPU invites you to join an interactive online public discussion featuring women leaders from the Post, the UPU and e-commerce.
In March, the UPU is also launching #PostForEqual - a social media campaign dedicated to gender equality. All posts are invited to share their employees' reflections on the topic “Why is gender equality important to achieve sustainable development, especially in the postal sector?”.

Posts and sustainable development
Through proper addressing, the Post connects those in poverty to essential social and economic services. UPU assists its member countries and their posts to put formal addressing systems in place, helping contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 1, which aims to end poverty.
Uruguay has been investing in its addressing system to foster the socio-economic development for those living in irregular settlements. With addresses, residents are able to offer services and conduct business more easily from their homes.
Reaching the unbanked with financial services, seizing digital transformation and e-commerce, facilitating trade, and connecting the most remote villages are just a few of the multitude of ways in which African posts can help the continent to turn great challenges into great opportunities.
