Forward to Friend Forward to Friend

Dear Friends in Christ,

I remember the first Easter I ever had after I had truly observed a Lenten discipline. I gave something up (probably alcohol or cigarettes), I took something on (probably some kind of Bible Study), and I gave the money I saved (neither tobacco nor alcohol were cheap) to a worthy cause. And I went to church, prayed that Stations of the Cross, and repented. On Easter I was exuberant! For those 40 Days I had really been with Jesus in the desert and now I was celebrating his resurrection! It was glorious!

As Deacon Bob tells in his history of Lent, the exact nature of how you observe a Holy Lent has changed over time. And personally, what is important one year might not be the next. Though I gave up smoking for Lent more than once, that no longer makes sense for me. And no, you can’t give Lent up for Lent!

What I’m sure of is that the season deserves observation! As a community we will give up saying the word Alleluia or Hallelujah in worship. We will also have greenery on the main altar rather than flowers. And we will say rather than sing the Lord’s Prayer. The hangings are now purple rather than green. We will start each service with the Penitential Order, moving the confession to the beginning of the service.

And I know that I will, indeed, observe the days of fasting that bracket the season. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday being the only two actual fast days on our calendar.

Whatever you feel called to participate in this season, I hope that you will set some time aside during this 40 day season to reflect on your own life and what God might be calling you to set aside, take up, or share. It may, like my cigarette experiments, lead to a life-long change. It might make you more appreciative of what you have when you take it back again. And the money you give in alms will truly bless the lives of those you give to.

Mostly, I pray that your observation of a Holy Lent will lead you to a fuller appreciation and enjoyment of the resurrected life Christ offers us.

Your friend in Christ,

All love,

The History of Lent

by Reverend Bob Sullivan

This week we began the season of Lent. The original idea for this season started in the early church and grew out of the forty days Jesus spent in the desert before he started his earthly ministry.

The first Lent emerged shortly after the Council of Nicea in 325AD. Its primary focus was on new converts to the faith so they would have a time of repentance and reflection before they were baptized on Easter day. The season of Lent quickly became a general practice for the whole church.

The earliest observances of Lent seem to focus on the practice of fasting. These fasts took on many different forms until they were regularized by Pope Gregory. He stated that the period of fasting was to begin on a Wednesday, 46 days before Easter with a ceremony of ashes.

Lenten practices remained essentially unchanged for centuries. Then, over time, the emphasis on fasting began to lessen and a new practice of “giving something up” began to emerge. The idea being that a person would give up some luxury or convenience as a personal sacrifice. This became the new centerpiece of Lent.

Over the years the practices of Lent have continued to evolve. While fasting and “giving something up” are still practiced, the focus has shifted more to preparing our hearts and minds for the message of Easter, just as those early converts were called to do.

The church challenges us to make this preparation by observing a holy Lent. We are called to “self-examination and repentance; to prayer, fasting, and self-denial; by reading and meditating on God’s holy Word.” [BCP #265]

Lent has always been an important time in the life of the church and its people. The more we live into the Lenten traditions, the more we prepare ourselves, the more glorious our Easter experience will be.
