EAA Chapter 234

Grand Traverse Region

Newsletter—February 2022
Nice Super Cub, right?
Look a little closer... it's actually a radio control model with a 106-inch wingspan, owned and flown by chapter members Bill and Brad Barber.

Upcoming Young Eagles Club events will be about building a flyable RC model. Read on for details.

From the president

Happy cold and snowy February to all!

If we can get the big lake to freeze we should have some decent flying weather absent any thermals.

What's happening?

We have a promising opportunity for our new office to share at March's gathering... be sure to attend so you can be among the first to know!

We have also unveiled our full schedule of events for this summer, including five fly-ins and one fly-out. There will be a whopping total of six opportunities for Young Eagles to fly. Take a look on our website and mark your calendars now! The first three Young Eagles events are already open for registration.

It's getting nigh near time to reserve your camping place with Chapter 234 at Camp Scholler for this summer's AirVenture. We had a hoot last year, and so should you. Email us or give me a call 269-924-7300 to reserve your spot. An added bennie is that you don't have to go through the looooong registration lines!

Come to (or Zoom in for) our monthly gatherings on the second Tuesday of the month at 1220 Airport Access Drive, 2nd Floor (It is the old GA terminal).

Saturday mornings you'll find us in the office, full of coffee and opinions starting at about 0900.  Come along, we miss you.

Monthly gathering

Grace Yakuber on community, networking, and navigating the industry

Thursday, March 10, 6:30 p.m.

EAA Chapter 234 Office
1220 Airport Access Road, 2nd floor, Traverse City

Join virtually via Zoom
Our featured speaker for our March gathering will be our own Grace Yakuber. Grace is a native of Mackinac Island and was the first student pilot to solo there, but she now calls Traverse City home.

She will talk about community building, methods of networking in aviation, and offer advice for Young Eagles about navigating the complicated social constructs that surround the aviation industry.

(Don't worry, she will first explain what a "social construct" is.)

Join us at the chapter office, or attend virtually. As always, we ask that you wear a mask if you are not fully vaccinated.

Membership dues

Time to renew (or join!)

It's a new year, which means it's time to pay membership dues. Your annual $25 dues (for an individual or entire family) support everything we do, including:
  • Empowering and engaging the next generation of aviators with our Young Eagles program
  • Planning fun monthly gatherings and special events like pancake breakfasts
  • Providing tools and supplies for our aircraft build projects
All that and more for only 1/4 of a $100 hamburger!

Current members can skip right to payment by using the blue button. If you would also like to update your contact information, use the green button.
Renew (Pay dues only)
Join or update contact information (and pay dues)
If you're not a current member, now is a great time to join! 2022 is going to be a big year for Chapter 234, and we'd love for you to be a part of it.

Note: EAA National membership annual dues are increasing from $40 to $48 effective May 1, 2022. If you renew before May 1 (even if it's early for you), you will only pay the $40 rate for a full additional year of membership.

(Being an EAA National member is not a requirement to be an EAA Chapter 234 member.)

Young Eagles Club

Radio-controlled model build

We are planning to host our Young Eagles Club meeting as previously announced next Saturday March 5th at 12:30 – 4:30 PM at the Chapter Office at 1220 Airport Access Rd.

Hopefully as pandemic conditions improve will be back to our normally scheduled monthly meetings. Our activity for the March and April Meetings will be to build a flyable radio-controlled model airplane.
Watch this video about the RC model we're building!
We think this will be a fun and educational project for the teams. Due to the cost of the kits, we are asking for a $10 per student donation to help us cover the cost of the kits and electronic components. We’ve been helped by generous donors that have offset most of the cost of the kits. If, however, this cost is an obstacle to your attendance please contact us and we can make other arrangements.

Looking forward to seeing you next Saturday!

Scholarship opportunity

Ray Scholarship returns for 2022

Young Eagles leader Jim Sorbie with our 2021 Ray Scholarship recipient, David Jeynes.
We are pleased to announce that EAA has selected our chapter to award another Ray Scholarship this year.

The Ray Scholarship is intended to provide the opportunity for young persons aged 15-19 to earn their Glider Pilot (15-19), Light Sport Pilot (16-19) or Private Pilot (16-19) license.

We were pleased to be able to award this scholarship last year to a local Student, David Jeynes, who is currently enrolled as a student pilot at Giving Wings Aviation here at Cherry Capitol Airport.

If you’re interested in learning to fly, this may be that once in a lifetime opportunity. For more information about the Ray Scholarship and information as to how to apply please go to our website.

News from HQ

Chapter video magazine

In February's Chapter Video Magazine, Charlie Becker discusses our upcoming Virtual Ultralight Days online event, training opportunities for chapter leaders, Learn to Fly Day, and International Young Eagles Day.

EAA webinars

To tear down, or not to tear down.

That is the question, isn't it? March's EAA webinars will answer that, and more. Tune in to learn when a full teardown of your engine may be necessary--and when it may not be. Or, consider "Shiny Side Up," about avoiding spatial disorientation, or another about using home flight sims for training and proficiency.

Some qualify for FAA WINGS or AMT credit. Check out the full list and register now.

Donations accepted

We want your old computers, TVs, tools

Are you getting ready to upgrade to a bigger screen before the big game? Do you have any extra computer equipment (desktops, laptops, tablets) that is less than three (or so) years old? We may be interested in it!

In particular, we are looking for:
  • Computers capable of running flight simulation for Young Eagles (no more than ~3 years old, with powerful graphics card)
  • A relatively recent laptop to run virtual meetings from
  • A big-screen TV
  • Other A/V or tech equipment that could be useful in our future office
  • Specialized tools for aircraft building
If you have something that you think might be useful, please let us know!

(We have plenty of books and magazines in the chapter library at the moment, so please find another home for those. Thanks!)

In addition, we always accept cold, hard cash. (Or checks that have been warmed in your pocket.) We are now a 501(c)(3) non-profit, so your donation is tax deductible. You can even donate by credit card on our website.
