Recap:
Value is the lightness or darkness
of a fabric,
compared to its neighbors.
Taking this idea further, these greens are sorted by value. The lights are at the top, mediums in the middle and darks at the bottom.
Believe it or not, value is more important than color. Differences in value create contrast.
And contrast makes your design visible.
Do you see the baskets in this small quilt?
No? That's because they're nearly invisible. The basket fabrics are so close in value to the background fabrics that they disappear. All of that work just for them to vanish without a peep.😔
When you understand value, you can make your baskets visible and avoid this problem. How exciting! Your quilts will shine when you start to exercise your creative muscles and your fabric savvy! No more disappearing baskets!
I used value to create Framework, above. This is one of my original Windy Wonders and I learned so much when I made it. Now it's part of the Windy Wonders trunk show. 😊
I'm sharing the Windy Wonders trunk show this evening on Zoom! Everyone is welcome to this ticketed event that begins at 7:30 pm Central. Admission is $15 and I'd love to see you there. Get your ticket now!
