   CS Spotlight:

Peekskill Parent Resource Center

“Within the Community School mindset, the Peekskill Parents Resource Center is that one-stop-shopping structure for the district so that families feel comfortable coming here. Outreach is about being embedded into the community.”

   Community of Practice Update

Over 160 people registered for our January Community of Practice, focused on Exploring and Strengthening SEL Competencies, facilitated by internationally recognized education consultant Ali Hearn.

Designed to encourage self-reflection, explore the integration of community schools with an expanded MTSS framework, foster dialogue, and provide practical, actionable resources, our bi-monthly CoP has been well-received by school districts and their CBO and County partners from across NYS - and beyond!

Here is a glimpse at how past Community of Practice participants describe the gatherings:

  • "Ali always provides a safe, caring, and experiential space filled with knowledge and learning."
  • "I'm really grateful for this community."

  • "I leave her sessions with a feeling of hope and agency. I hope that I can reflect this feeling to the others I work with."

Be sure to explore our CoP recordings and resources from the fall, including tools like CASEL’s SEL Adult Self-Assessment. We hope you join us for our next Community of Practice on March 18th, Implementing Restorative Practices Using a Community Schools Approach By Expanding a MTSS Framework. Register here.

Culturally Responsive Curriculum Scorecards

Community schools looking to evaluate their curriculum for culturally responsive elements can use the new tool launched by The Metropolitan Center for Research on Equity and the Transformation of Schools.

The Culturally Responsive Curriculum Scorecards were developed collaboratively by NYC parents, students, educators and researchers, as a tool to help determine the extent to which English Language Art, Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) curricula are (or are not) culturally responsive.

This resource is especially useful for alignment with the NYSED Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education Framework, which features Inclusive Curriculum and Assessment as one of the four core principles.
