Information Session with Greg Macleod.
Entering Plants into Competition.
Greg was focussed on the Autumn Show 2-3/4 2022
First download the Show Schedule.
Go to the BSQ website, find Resources, Show Schedule, then fill in the simplified entry form.
Growers can enter up to three plants in each Class.
Use the binomial name, registered name is preferred, enter them a,b and c.
In the Show Schedule, there are 7 Divisions:
1.Specimens, ie., single plants.
2.Multiples, which must be mature, can have small offsets, but must be interconnected.
3.Horticultural, ie., a big pot of bromeliads, but not a decorative pot.
4.Artistic, decorative pot or mount, like our Novelty display.
5.Art, photos, painting, etc.
6.Exhibits, or large display with many bromeliads.
7.Novice, by persons never entered before, and who can’t enter in other divisions.
President Pam Butler advised that standard pots were black- no other colours,
and terracotta pots with no embellishment, say for Dyckias.

Plant of The Month:
Alcantareas with Stan Walkley.
Stan focussed his talk on the variegated Alcantareas.
Given the size of Alcantareas, Stan could bring only two plants in pots,
and 17 leaves from his collection of variegates.
His Alcantareas are grown in full sun, and get both solid fertiliser like Osmocote,
and liquid fertiliser. He grows them on 22 acres at Rosemount.
Al ‘Yellow Star’ a selfed, seed-raised variegate of glaziouana,
with yellow margins by Bruce Duncan:
Al. ‘Sunshine’, a centrally striped variegate of glaziouana, by Gavin McLeod, 2007.
This fetched $3,000 a plant on first release.
Al. ‘Mellow Yellow’, has a creamy central stripe,
from glaziouana by Bruce Duncan, 2006:
Al. ‘Snowy’, a sport of Mellow Yellow,
Al. ‘Bobby Powell’, grown from a seed batch of odorata,
with several central yellow stripes, by Bruce Duncan, 2000:
Al. ‘Bobby Gold’, Vegetative variegated sport
developed on a conventional offset of Bobby Powell, by Bruce Duncan, 2006:
Al. imperialis rubra variegata From Rio de Janiero, Brazil, 2004.
Al. ‘John Stoddart’ has a broad central yellow stripe, is the first reported
variegate of glaziouana, wild collected in Brazil, named for a Venezuelan grower.
Al. ‘P.I.T.A.’ has wide leaves with creamy white margins, from extensa, wild collected by C. Skotak in Brazil. Stan bought pups for $400 each, now has many, and sells for $60-100 potted:
Al. ‘Silver Plum’ is from imperialis, has powdery grey-green foliage obverse, deep red / plum reverse , from R. Dilling, NSW, 2002.
Thanks Stan for a delightful overview of variegated Alcantareas.

Guest Speaker was Amanda Meads who demonstrated her skill in creating a Floral Arrangement.
Amanda conducts a Florist School.
For cutting plants, she insists on a knife, never scissors, which crush the plant.
Amanda started with a block of black foam which is 90% water.
The first stage was to create the background with attractive foliage,
such as Xanadu, and Song of India.
Next is adding the flowers. On hand were Guzmanias, Aechmea ramosa,
Portea alatisepala, and ginger blooms.
Florists rarely get to use bromeliad blooms because they are not available.
The final creation will need watering. It might attract a buyer for $150.
Thanks Amanda for showing how to skilfully create a floral display.
