Dear Service Design Insider,

Welcome to the first SDN Insider of the year 2022. We, the SDN HQ and Leadership Team, have identified several key service design topics we will be focussing on and discuss with you as the year progresses. We are more than thrilled to kick off the first topic - Service Design & Leadership!

Service design leaders bring a truly empathetic and holistic perspective into organisations. They do not only bridge the silos within the organisation, but they also bring the perspectives of the ecosystem, including user perspectives, employee journeys, sustainability issues, ethics -to mention a few- to the table. And they do not only bring it to the table; they are capable of visualising and communicating the relevant insights so that people can relate to them without necessarily having to be experts on a specific point of view. And most of all, designers dare to dream and help others dream and envision futures that do not yet exist. They can visualise these futures to be tested, iterated, made tangible and doable.

So let us reflect on what it takes to become an outstanding service design leader!

Happy reading, service designers! ✨
Warmest regards,
Birgit

Take the short survey!

At our Service Design Global Conference in 2014, talk speaker Mia Kleregård, Head of Service at Systembolaget, spoke about how Systembolaget chose to develop their service through leadership training with a clear intention of “becoming the best I can be”. Only to realise that not only did the meaning of work change – even the value of life changed. Passionate leadership that involves and engage employees to become “the best they can” be was their key. How do they do it? Mia inspired the audience by sharing some key takeaways. Welcome to a presentation in true inspiration on how to create value for life and your employees.

Exciting news, designers! We have officially opened the new Touchpoint issue Vol. 13 No. 2 call for papers! Over the past years, there has been much discussion around "service design thinking" and "service design doing". We feel it's time to understand better "service design leading". After all, that is how much thinking and doing gets done.

Get your abstracts ready, and please submit your abstract via our website! Our upcoming theme is "Service Design and Leadership".

Can Service Design Deliver Organisational Change?

Service designers strive to be human-centred, co-creative, collaborative, reframing, experimental and structured. However, these principles are typically applied to project content but not the surrounding context. Service designers tackling capability building work, which weighs heavily on organisational matters, need the right mindset and tools to interrogate the organisational landscape beyond the capacity-building work itself.

This article, written by Service Designer Clara Llamas (she/her) from our SDN member organisation Livework Studio, dives into the concept of using service design as a tool for leadership and organisational change!
