Curated Articles: Restoring community dialogue and resilience: The next COVID-19 emergency
COVID-19 is not the first health crisis to affect Canada. Previous emergencies, like the Lac-Mégantic train tragedy in 2013, showed the importance of including the affected communities to promote better adherence to preventive measures and build resilient communities. Our research shows this is largely missing for COVID-19, with high costs on society as a whole. Read more here

Curated Articles: Is it possible to get reinfected with Omicron?
For the English version, please click here.

Curated Articles: Masks and other pandemic measures are necessary at school, but can make it harder to hear in classrooms
Masks, social distancing and increased ventilation are all necessary pandemic measures in classrooms, but they can make for a difficult listening and hearing environment for students and teachers. While this is true for students with hearing loss, the capacity for COVID-19 measures to affect all students' ability to hear clearly should also be considered. Read the full article here.

Curated Articles: Why experts say booster shots are still critical, even if vaccine policies are relaxed
With some provinces taking steps to end proof of vaccination policies and COVID-19 infections hitting record numbers during the Omicron wave even among the vaccinated, experts say vaccines and booster shots still remain a critically important tool against the pandemic. Access the full article here

Curated Articles: Travel rules are changing on Feb. 28. Here's what you need to know about COVID-19 testing and more
The federal government announced Tuesday that it is lifting or modifying several travel-related restrictions, as Canada has now moved beyond the peak of the Omicron wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. The changes will take effect on Feb. 28 and only impact fully vaccinated travellers and children who may not yet be fully vaccinated. Read more about the change here

Curated Articles: Hey, Where's My Rapid Test?
B.C. has received at least one rapid antigen COVID test for each of its five million residents. But finding them has been a big challenge. In recent months the tests, which can be used at home to diagnose COVID-19 within minutes, were swapped more than holiday cards. The quest to obtain them has been part sleuthing, part scavenging and part smuggling operation. Find out the answer here

Curated Articles: How books, movies and TV help us understand the infodemic, anti-vax messages and conspiracy theories
The World Health Organization defines an infodemic as “too much information including false or misleading information in digital and physical environments during a disease outbreak.”While the term is new, the problem is not. For centuries, writers have recognized that disease outbreaks spur the spread of incorrect information or misinformation. Discover more from here

Curated Articles: New COVID-19 study links nurses’ mental health to quality of care
Stories of stress and burnout among healthcare workers, particularly nurses, continue to make news during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, new research shows these mental health problems could be contributing to decreased quality of patient care. The study, published recently in the journal Healthcare, found that the more severe the mental health symptoms reported by nurses, the more likely they will rate the quality of care in their work units in hospitals, long-term care homes and community health centres as poor. Curated Articles: A Post-Secondary Student's Guide to Mental Health During Covid-19
If the pandemic has left you feeling worried, sad, or overwhelmed, you are not alone. You've been asked to adapt to a new way of learning while support systems are being pushed beyond their limits. The online resources that are available are scattered across the internet, which makes it hard to find accurate and appropriate support. Read the full guide here

Curated Articles: What a trip to Africa showed me about 'my' COVID-19 vaccine and Canada's obligations
Here is a three-part series that delves into what went wrong with the global vaccine rollout — and what the consequences will be. "Fighting for a shot' looks at how the global rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine has left some countries to the outside, looking in. The author is Alex Boyd pulls back the curtain on the forces contributing to that inequity and the toll-both in human lives and on national economies- that may be felt for generations. Check his findings here.

Curated Articles: If restrictions and mandates are being lifted, thank the silent majority that got vaccinated
The Ontario government caught people by surprise last Monday when it unexpectedly announced that it would scrap its proof-of-vaccine requirement as of March 1, and end all capacity limits on restaurants, bars, gyms and other indoor venues as of this past Thursday. Click here to read more.

Curated Articles: WSPS: We're all exhausted. Here's what workplaces can do about it
Employee fatigue is at an all-time high. Since 2020, staff shortages, higher workloads and teleworking, have dramatically altered our work and home lives, pushing many of us to the point of exhaustion. But even before the pandemic, fatigue was a growing workplace concern due to increasing physical and cognitive demands on employees, says WSPS Consultant Julia Lok. Read the full section here

Curated Articles: Is Omicron leading us closer to herd immunity against COVID?
For the English version, please click here

Black History Month: Revisiting and learning from the Black liberation movement
The last two years have forced us to look at society’s deep contradictions and ask ourselves: what has really changed for equity-deserving communities? For Cheryl Thompson, professor in the School of Performance, the recent book bannings in the U.S. is an opportunity to look back through history to see how we’ve arrived here. And for her, book banning represents a history of changing the window dressings instead of the rotting foundation. "Imagine if back in the 50s, instead of integrating the schools, they had integrated the school board?" she says. Finish your reading here

Community Story: With 'Turning Red,' Domee Shi wants to tell the story of your childhood
There’s a scene in Turning Red, the upcoming Pixar movie directed by Canadian wunderkind Domee Shi, that had me guffawing in bed. Mei, the 13-year-old protagonist, begins sketching a boy on the pages of her math homework when she realizes she’s drawing the likeness of Devon, a 17-year-old boy who works at the local Daisy Mart in Toronto’s Chinatown, where she lives.
