Fraudsters are always learning new tricks to get your money. March is Fraud Prevention Month when we put the spotlight on fraudsters’ tactics. For example, you may be curious about crypto currencies. There are ads and news stories everywhere. But despite the hype, remember buyer beware. Learn to spot the red flags of crypto fraud.

The OSC is hosting a few events during Fraud Prevention Month to help you Get Smarter About Fraud. Join our Twitter chat on March 3 at 1 p.m. We’ll be using the OSC’s investor education account, @smarter_money. Follow the hashtags #FraudChat and #FPM2022.

Avoiding affinity fraud
|
An Ontario man pleaded guilty recently to fraud and money laundering for his involvement in a $48-million Ponzi scheme. He lured people to invest in a device for retail stores that did not actually exist. A Ponzi or pyramid scheme is a common type of affinity fraud. Apply to join the Investor Advisory Panel

The OSC is inviting applications for membership on its independent Investor Advisory Panel (IAP), which provides an investor perspective on policy, rule-making and other regulatory initiatives. The IAP is an important voice for investors in the regulatory process. New members will be selected to ensure that the panel continues to represent a broad range of relevant experience, skills, knowledge and perspectives. Apply by Thursday March 3.

|
OSC in the Community is an outreach program that takes the OSC's regulatory mandate from Bay Street to Main Street. OSC staff travel to communities across Ontario to talk to people about making informed financial decisions and avoiding investment fraud.
