Legacy of Patrick Hough lives on through CASEE program

The legacy of Patrick "Paddy" Hough has grown like one of his beloved plants since the teacher and school administrator passed away in 1925. Hough left behind an endowment intended to fund the building of an agricultural high school in Clark County. While that dream was never fully realized, the Community Foundation Patrick Hough Endowment Fund continues to benefit agricultural education in the area, especially through Battle Ground Public Schools' CASEE program. This year, the Fund donated $103,807 to benefit the CASEE site, as well as programs at Battle Ground and Prairie high schools.

“I think a program like CASEE, along with what Battle Ground and Prairie high schools are doing, is probably exactly what Paddy Hough had in mind for that vision of agriculture education,” said Cindy Arnold, Director of Career and Technical Education for the district. “He wanted kids to be able to learn the skills to go into the agricultural field.”

Applications open for Battle Ground Public Schools ALE programs

Battle Ground Public Schools’ (BGPS) specialized and alternative learning experience programs are accepting enrollment applications for the 2022-23 school year. The district offers four specialized and alternative programs for students in kindergarten through high school. Information about CAM Academy, CASEE, River HomeLink and Summit View High School, including application requirements and deadlines, is on the district website.

Prairie High School celebrates two state wrestling champions

One pulled off a shocking last-minute pin, the other needed overtime to win her final match, but in the end Prairie High School ended up making history at the Mat Classic in Tacoma last weekend. Freshman Faith Tarrant only moved to the area from Colorado last October. "I didn’t really think I was going to have any friends,” Tarrant told The Columbian newspaper after her win. “This team has made a family for me. I love it.” Tarrant's impressive victory makes her the first female wrestling champion in Prairie High School's history.

Alex Ford said his goal entering the competition was to finish no lower than eighth place. During his final match against Austin Justice of Mead, Ford trailed 5-1 before pulling off a flurry of moves to pin his opponent. The junior becomes the first boys champion for the school since Jay Rogers in 1987. “I feel like I won it for more people than just me,” Ford told The Columbian. “For all my partners that have helped me grow. Those are really important people to me. I feel like I won it with their help.”

Ford was also voted Prep Athlete of the Week for week 20 by The Columbian's readers, becoming the fourth Prairie athlete to win the award during the winter sports season alone.

Battle Ground High School also had some strong showings at state athletic events. Gunnar Henderson finished 5th in wrestling's 145-pound weight class. In swimming, Carsten Hicks finished 6th in the 100 butterfly. It's a great time to be a Tiger or a Falcon!
