February 2022 Edition

Change is the only reliable thing in the world.”

“Heraclitus,” I murmured.

“The wisest of men” said Philippe, pleased that I recognized the quote. “The gods like to surprise us when we grow complacent. It’s their favorite form of entertainment.” He studied my unusual costume. “Why are you wearing Matthew’s shirt and hose?”

SHADOW OF NIGHT

Eleven years ago, on February 8 2011, A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES went out into the world.

Eleven years ago today, I was an excited but nervous history professor who didn't know what to expect. People seemed excited, but who knew?? I hoped a few people outside my family would read it. I was determined to stand firm in the face of skeptics who said I wouldn't be taken seriously as a historian ever again and I wouldn't succeed as a novelist either. But I wanted to tell stories--rich with history and science and magic. Inside a classroom and beyond it. And I'm proud to say that more than a decade later I'm still at it. Look at where we are now. Four books and counting. A brilliant tv show.

There have been many, many changes (damn that Philippe!!). I don't really like change. But I do like to edit. Hence this T-shirt--from my favorite shop @editwhidbey. And its appearance today on my feed. We all have learned the power of a good edit in the past few years because of pandemic. I've been grappling with a full-body edit lately with my cancer surgery and treatment. Ovaries, hair, my sense of invulnerability--it turns out I can live without all of them. Because you know what? A good edit makes room for something new to grow. New stories. New words. New experiences. New sources of joy, gratitude, and light. You, dear readers, have been such sources for me for 10 years.

I very much plan on giving new words and new stories in the years ahead. Thank you for your patience as I do a bit more editing--draft 7 of my work in progress (this thing is a monster and it's not Gallowglass's fault!) and some more chemotherapeutic spring cleaning.

If you are struggling with change, or celebrating it, remember: it's just a life edit. And sometimes, like ADOW, they are filled with magic. Thanks for reading. Thanks for being part of the All Souls Family. To be continued...

today’s gratitude

Rediscovering my childhood love of logic puzzles, the pear trees that are filled with white, fragrant blossoms and a clean house to cozy up in all weekend.

I’ve been wanting to post this for a long time—

—ever since I saw a monitor shot from the B camera on @adiscoveryofwitchestv Series 3.

This was my inspiration for Fernando: a 1508 drawing by Albrecht Durer of a man who was described then as “a moor”. The second picture is @olivierhuband in a screen grab that sent shivers down my spine because everything about him was such a close match to my inspiration.

I was so taken aback I sent it to Olivier. We both agreed it was uncanny—and that one day we would share it with you. Thank you Olivier Huband for bringing our Fernando to glorious life. ♥️

This silly cactus I pass on my walks that looks like it's reaching out for a hug

Just to reiterate

♥️ I have many, many more Bishop/ de Clermont stories to tell

♥️ I was working on one of them when I was diagnosed with cancer which has slowed my roll

♥️ currently, Gallowglass's tale is #3 in queue. (It is an epic story and I can’t wait to tell it.)

♥️ queue shifts—remember the TSM/TC saga! What I mean by this is when THE SERPENT'S MIRROR (TSM) title was announced before I was ready, it messed with my head and creative process. That book slowed to halt and TIME'S CONVERT (TC) roared up from back of queue and became book #4.

♥️ My life is so surreal at the moment, I don't have the brain space to make stuff up!

#PatienceIsADeClermontVirtue because PLOT TWISTS happen in writing and in life.

I have to tell the stories they reveal in my way. No ordering off menu! #NoSubstitutions #ChefAtWork. And surprises can be wonderful.

My fave new coffee, named The Vicar after my tv/film agent who married me + wife & makes me marshmallows: oat milk cappuccino & marshmallow!

what i’m reading this month

Grateful for the the wisdom and perspective found in @morganhnichols' new book--highly recommend it!

It has been my great privilege to teach so many talented, curious, and brilliant students over the years, both at the graduate AND undergraduate level. When the work of a former student comes out, you feel a pride that you simply don't have for your own work. My heart is bursting with pride now that I've got this marvelous piece of scholarship published by @uncpress in my hands.

I am so proud of you, @xtinaramos81, for so many reasons. Your lucid mind. Your historical empathy. Your persistence. Your imagination. And, as I said to the dean at UC Davis when you won the top prize for your honors thesis: "she writes better than I do." I stand by that statement and can't wait to dive in! #proudteachermoment

This is a version of my story. I was told to meditate, avoid stress, lose weight. It was ovarian cancer. Please read, know the signs, advocate for yourself. It took me 3 months & I'm a pretty forceful person. It took Hannah 3 years. ⁦@washingtonpost
