Life, like nature, moves in cycles. We have seasons of plenty and joy where everything seems to go our way. And then suddenly, we have a few bad experiences and before we know it, we’re in dark times of despair and bad luck. When we’re in those cycles, it feels as though things will never turn around for us. But they do. The wheel of fortune will eventually turn in our favor. But what if something we are doing is keeping that wheel of fortune stuck on bad luck? Is there anything we can do about it? Can we control our own luck? Yes we can.
1. STAY POSITIVE. Like attracts like. We know that. We’ve watched The Secret. We’ve seen scientists demonstrate it. We’ve experienced it in our own lives. We are drawn to people and experiences that are most like us. So if you’re in a negative cycle, you will keep attracting negative people and events. The best way to change this is to stay positive. Take a media moratorium. You don’t need to know about all the bad things going on in the world. Read positive, uplifting books, watch comedies, avoid your Debbie Downer friends. Keep your energy light and positive. 2. GET OFF SOCIAL MEDIA. Many studies show that going onto social media sites actually make us feel worse about our life. University of Michigan Psychologist Ethan Kross’s study showed that the more people went on Facebook, the sadder they felt throughout the day. Other studies show that social media makes us feel envious, lonely, and more like a failure. So take a break from it. Do you really need to know that your college roommate’s son made the honor roll again?
3. WORK HARD. Studies show that work makes us happy. If you hate your job, work toward getting a new one. If you’re out of work, volunteer at a place that makes you happy. Thomas Jefferson said, “I’m a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more of it I have.” Working makes us feel useful, needed, and productive. So work toward a goal that makes you happy every day. If you hate your job, but you want to be a writer, go home and write every night. If your work as an accountant isn’t fulfilling you, but you love dogs, volunteer at your animal shelter to walk the dogs on Saturdays. The key is to feel what you’re doing with your life matters. Work on that, and you will magically attract good luck.
4. DREAM BIG. People who have dreams and goals are happier – and luckier – than their peers who simply plod through life paying bills, going to work, and watching TV. Re-discover your passions. Set specific goals. Create action-oriented goals to work toward your dreams.
5. DON’T GIVE UP. Don’t give up on yourself. Writer Anita Shreve once said, “The only difference between a published writer and an unpublished writer is the published one never gave up.” So many people hit a certain age and look around at their life and say, “So this is it. This is my life.” But no! Your life is what you make it and you have to remember that in every situation, in every moment, you have a choice to be happy or to be sad. It’s your choice. How you view your life will determine your luck.
TEN FUN WAYS TO INVITE GOOD LUCK INTO YOUR LIFE
Carry an acorn in your pocket. The oak tree has long been a symbol of strength, endurance and wisdom. The tiny acorn that will grow into the mighty oak is a symbol of hope and good luck. Carry one with you as a reminder that you too are growing in strength and wisdom.
Place a bamboo plant on your desk or in the wealth corner of your home which is the southeast corner according to Feng Shui. Make sure the bamboo plant has at least five stalks. Bamboo is considered lucky for finances because it grows so abundantly and easily.
Place 5 shiny pennies under your doormat to invite more luck into your life.
Put a key on your key chain that doesn’t open any doors in your home. Ask it to help you unlock doors to more luck in love and happiness.
On the first day of each month, say the word “rabbit” first thing upon waking up. This old tradition is supposed to usher in good luck for the whole month.
Write the number 8 on a piece of paper and tuck it in your wallet to ensure financial good luck. Eight has long been considered a lucky number. Many believe this is because the Chinese word for eight sounds a lot like their word for prosperity.
Keep a bowl of oranges in your kitchen. Oranges are a symbol of good luck and invite blessings into your life.
Hang a wind chime in your home to help clear away negativity and bless your home each time it rings out.
Plant Chrysanthemums or keep a vase of these beautiful flowers in your home. As a symbol for the sun and joy, Chrysanthemums bring happiness to your home.
Keep a small, tabletop fountain in your home or at your desk. The flowing waters help usher out negativity and keep a positive flow of blessings in your life.
Crystal of the Month: Green Aventurine
Green Aventurine awakens, aligns, and clears the heart chakra. It’s known as The Stone of Luck. Wearing or carrying Green Aventurine brings luck in love and money. It’s a stone of abundance helping you manifest prosperity and love in your life.
Green Aventurine helps you grow in love and evolve through stages of personal growth. Many crystal healers say Green Aventurine helps one attract love, especially for those who have given up hope.
Green Aventurine is great for people who tend to feel they don’t deserve happiness and success. It helps to gently remove these negative blocks to your rightful success as it creates new opportunities for luck, love, and money in your life.

Book of the Month
My roommate in college had this hilarious (if raunchy) mantra whenever bad things happened. She’d shrug and say, “F*ck it.” If she overslept for her 8 am class – “F*ck it.” When she missed the deadline for class registration – “F*ck it.” When a boy broke her heart - “F*ck it.” I used to watch her in wonder as she glided through life effortlessly.
I recently devoured Michael Singer’s book The Surrender Experiment which is about learning to accept what is and surrender to life in this beautiful balance of trust and love. Ironically, Singer’s story reminded me of my roommate’s mantra. What if we went through life – not with a “F*ck It” approach – but with a shrug and a trust fall into all life has to offer? How different would our lives look if we didn’t feel the need to control things? To plan and schedule? To overthink decisions and possibilities? Reading his book has made me rethink everything and start to shrug more when life’s troubles land at my door and simply say, “F*ck It. All will work out as it should.” His stories have made me realize (or remember) that we really aren’t in control at all. So little is actually in our hands. But his stories prove that when we trust in the Universe, God, your higher power – that everything not only works out but events and people manifest in ways that are beyond our wildest dreams.
You can listen to The Surrender Experiment for free on Audible by going to audible.com/psychicteachers or you can text the word “psychicteachers” to 500-500 and get a free month to try as many books, podcasts or meditations as your heart desires.
