Knowledge and action to address the global
challenges of extreme heat and human health

February 2022

10 HEAT HEALTH HIGHLIGHTS
FROM THE IPCC AR6 REPORT

The Working Group II contribution to the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report - AR6 Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability - released 28 February 2022, confirms our state of knowledge about current and future impacts of extreme heat on human health, and the solutions needed.

Congratulations to all contributors for this important work, including lead authors Dr. Kristie Ebi and Prof. Glenn McGregor of the GHHIN Management Committee.

Read the IPCC report and take a quick look at the top 10 AR6 heat health findings.

Learning Across the Network

Cool Roofs Project in Burkina Faso

Adaptation solutions in the housing sector can protect vulnerable populations against climate stresses such as heat, particularly in low income settings.

Learn about the Cool Roofs project, led by Heidelberg Institute of Global Health and Centre de Recherche en Santé de Nouna, in Nouna, Burkina Faso. This household-randomized controlled trial is helping to: (i) establish the effect of the cool roof on heart rate (as an indicator of physiological stress) and (ii) quantify the effects of the cool roof on indoor temperature, indoor humidity, cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, household energy consumption, and socioeconomic outcomes.

Regional and Sector Specific Vulnerability to Occupational Heat-Stress: Recommendations

A final report by the HEAT-SHIELD project provides regional effect analyses identifying inequalities across EU and case studies of agriculture, construction, tourism, manufacturing, and transport with further specification of sub-groups of workers particularly vulnerable to environmental heat-stress effects.
