Rina's Message to the Staff, Sara's Savvy Sources, CJ's Mental Health Tips, Our Employees of the Month, Birthdays and Anniversaries, and OT Tips for the month!

Greetings From Rina

Enhancing SLEA’s Interdisciplinary Team

SLEA Family,

We are almost in March!! I do not know where the time is going! I hope everyone is finding meaning and feeling purposeful every day in their roles at SLEA. We do A LOT! We have speech therapy, occupational therapy, behavior intervention, mental health, child development, and educational therapy. We service clients across all ages in the clinic setting, school setting, home setting, and out in the community. We work on goals that enable individuals to access the curriculum academically as well as work on goals that will enable individuals to function in society more independently. Our staff are incredible and are constantly learning.

I want you all to remember that even if you are in the field or in an environment where you are working more independently, you are not alone. You have a team of therapists, across different disciplines, that are supportive and great at what they do! Take advantage of your directors, supervisors, and colleagues! Reach out to team members and programs to gain insight on any information that may help you in your treatment of a client. As many of you know, just because a client comes in for speech therapy, doesn’t mean they don’t have behavior needs, sensory needs, or academic needs. Maybe the parents need more training or more support! Refer out to other programs when you feel there is more, we can be doing for a client. Talk to the directors about consultations or any ideas that can help you in treating the “whole client.” We are extremely fortunate to have such an amazing team. If you think we can be doing more for a family/client, tell us and advocate for more support. Whether through using insurance, schools, finding a way to contract privately, or providing a free of cost consultation, we will do our best to make it work so that our clients are getting the quality care they need to succeed.

Wishing you a wonderful month,

Rina

Michelle Conklin

February Employee of the Month!!!
What is your favorite therapy tool or game?
One of my favorite therapy tools (at the moment) is Cariboo!  It is so motivating and flexible! You can use it to target language, articulation, fluency, etc. The kids just love that little treasure chest at the end.

What advice would you give to a new clinician if you can only tell them one thing?
The one thing I would tell a new clinician is that as much as we want to be, we can't be perfect. We all make mistakes and we are constantly learning. Don't take yourself too seriously, learn from your mistakes, and move on!

What do you like to do outside of work?
I love to cook, bake, and hang out with my family!

Thank you Michelle, for all of your hard work!

Iris Barragan

February Behavior Employee of the Month!
Tell us about your experience in the field. How many years have you been in the field of behavior? Where do you see yourself in the next year or two?
I have been in the field of behavior for four years now, three of which have been with SLEA. In the next year or two I see myself going back to school to earn my Master's Degree ( I am just waiting for my baby to be a little older).

What are some challenges you meet with your clients? How do you work to overcome them?
A great challenge I meet with my clients is deescalating tantrums. In this situation I stay calm, limit demands and allow my client to have alone time to recollect themselves before any demands are given.

Describe your most fun and unique activity you have been able to run with a client in session?
My most fun activity has been playing "beauty salon" where my client and I gave each other make overs.

What types of things do you like to do for fun with your friends and family?
I am an outdoors kind of girl. I LOVE having picnics, and going hiking with my kids. Food is my love language, so I love going on dinner dates with my friends.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
If I could go anywhere in the world, it would be Jerusalem because there is just so much ancient history there.

Thank you Iris, for all your hard work!

OT Treatment Tips With

Dr. Baily Zubel

Where is crawling?
This week the CDC updated developmental milestones, but where is crawling? It is true that not every child crawls; in isolation and everything else on track as an occupational therapist I’ll let it slide even if I don’t like it. As providers I look at crawling in the big picture of global development. Army crawling, scootching, or skipping crawling all together puts this skill among the first intervention strategies for me when a client comes through my doors – even for 7 and 8 year old’s!

Why is crawling important?
Crawling impacts so many developmental skills including many that are not noticeable until later in childhood. Check out this resource for some intervention ideas!

Benefits of crawling:

  • Core strengthening and postural stability
  • Integration of STNR reflex
  • Integration of ATNR reflex
  • In general, disassociating the head from the trunk (for school-aged children this impacts their ability to copy from the board!)
  • Left and right laterality
  • Developing the muscles of the shoulder girdle
  • Developing the intrinsic (small) muscles in the hands (for handwriting!!!)
  • Balance
  • Motor planning
  • Environmental awareness
  • Knowing where your body is in space
  • Exploring new textures
  • My list could go on and on!!

My job is to support childhood occupational and set them up for success – so I remember crawling.
