In August 2021, Yingying Luo, a student at Interlake High School, hosted a free online Python programming class for elementary and middle schoolers with no prior experience. Eight lessons with hands-on activities and homework covered variables, operators, loops, and graphics. The host created presentation slides herself, thus keeping the format consistent. This clarity facilitated learning, as one student named Cao noted that lessons were “structured and very organized.” Mao, another student, commented, “My parents have enrolled me in three python classes, and this one was the best! A reason was the homework, it allowed me to fully understand the contents of the class!”

Afterwards, Yingying compiled and shared materials to almost 90 individuals who were unable to attend the live class sessions. Yang’s mother, whose child self-studied with these resources, remarked, “Many thanks for Yingying’s Python videos, my daughter loves them. The teaching is really outstanding, and the curriculum is arranged with careful considerations.”

Due to the encouraging feedback, Yingying hosted another class building upon the first class’s content in December 2021. This time, enrollment fees were donated to Little Masters Club’s Fur Friend Rescue project. Zhu’s mother, who is actively involved in her child’s programming education, observed, “Very well taught. The content appears well selected, with no redundant parts in slides and content, including exercises and assignments. Key concepts are addressed straight to the point, and I feel like a lot of thought was put into practice assignments.”

Yingying’s father, who wrote an online textbook to teach young children programming, asserts that an introduction to programming is not just about writing code, but about thinking fundamentally in terms of algorithms and striving for simplicity, organization, and elegance. In this respect, students have gained a solid foundation for programming from this class. With the rapid development of technology, such a skill is essential in modern society. Meanwhile, Yingying reflects that planning and leading lessons has taught her the crucial skills of time management and communicating to a target audience. Overall, the two series of Python classes have proved meaningful and rewarding for everyone involved, thanks to support from Little Masters Club.
