CHUMASH

Parshas Vayakhel - Shishi

There are no Rashis in today’s Chumash, because we are reviewing what we already learned in Parshas Terumah, and Rashi explained it there.

In today’s Chumash, we see how Betzalel and Oholiav made the Menorah, the Mizbeiach Haketores, the Shemen Hamish’cha (oil for getting things ready to be used for a special kedusha job), and the Ketores — just like Hashem told them to!

TEHILLIM

113 - 118

There is a posuk in today’s Tehillim, in Kapitel Kuf-Yud-Ches (118) that says “Hashem Li Be’ozroi, Va’ani Ereh Be’Son’ai.” “Hashem is with me, with my helpers, and I will see my enemies fall.”

How can Dovid Hamelech say that Hashem is WITH his helpers? Can there be a helper except for Hashem?

Chassidus explains that the “helpers” are the Gashmius things in the world. Hashem put a piece of Kedusha into the Gashmius things, and when we use them, we get this koach to help us! So together with davening and asking Hashem to help him, a person also needs to have the Elokus which is in the Gashmius to help him!

A person once asked the Frierdiker Rebbe, “If somebody says the whole Tehillim every day, or says the parts for each day of the week, so he finishes it each Shabbos, does he also need to say the daily shiur of Tehillim the way it is split up for Chitas?”

The Frierdiker Rebbe answered, “If there is a wagon full of barrels of oil, you still need to put oil on the wheels to grease them.”

Even though saying a lot of Tehillim is very special, the daily piece of Tehillim is something we all NEED, the same way that a wagon wheel NEEDS grease so that it can turn smoothly. It’s not enough to just HAVE Tehillim, we need to have the right parts of Tehillim for each day so that our day can go smoothly!

TANYA

Likutei Amarim Perek Lamed-Beis

When we think about OURSELVES in a way that we realize that the neshama is the main thing, we will look at another Yid the same way too! This way we will be able to have true Ahavas Yisroel for EVERY SINGLE YID, no matter who!

How?

First, let’s think about why it’s hard to have Ahavas Yisroel. People look and sound and act differently. Some are tall or short, loud or quiet, smart or talented. Some people are mean, and some people are nice. There are people who like to play, or read, or give presents, or get presents! There are people that like different things and have different personalities. That makes it hard to love everyone the same!

But all these differences are only because of the guf. Our neshamos are all the same — they are all part of Hashem!

So if we are able to look at ourselves and see that the main thing is the neshama (through the hisbonenus we just learned), we can see that for every other Yid too, the main thing is the neshama! Then, there are no differences, and we can have Ve’ahavta Lereiacha Kamocha to every Yid equally, no matter how big or small he is!

HAYOM YOM

Chof-Daled Adar Alef

R’ Hillel Paritcher was a very great chossid of the Alter Rebbe, and later the Mitteler Rebbe. The Mitteler Rebbe told all of the Chassidim that came to Lubavitch, that on their way home they should teach the Chassidus they heard in all of the towns and villages they pass. Before leaving Lubavitch, R’ Hillel Paritcher asked the Mitteler Rebbe how to follow this hora’ah in places where people don’t understand Chassidus at all.

The Mitteler Rebbe told him that he should chazer Chassidus in those places too, because “the neshama hears.” Even if they don’t understand the Chassidus, their neshama hears it.

The Mitteler Rebbe used a posuk to show R’ Hillel that not only does the neshama hear the Chassidus, but it gives the person koach to do what Hashem wants!

SEFER HAMITZVOS

Shiur #257 - Mitzvas Asei #236

Today’s mitzvah (Mitzvas Asei #236) is the same as yesterday’s: that if a person makes someone else get hurt, or damages their things, he needs to pay him to make up for what he did.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Mishpatim: וְכִי יְרִיבֻן אֲנָשִׁים וְהִכָּה אִישׁ אֶת רֵעֵהוּ

The details of this mitzvah are explained in Perek Ches of Mesechta Bava Kama.

RAMBAM

Hilchos Chovel U'Mazik

In today’s Rambam, we learn two perakim about the halachos of someone who hurt another person, and we start learning the halachos about someone who damaged someone else’s possessions.

Perek Daled talks about kinds of people that have different halachos if they got hurt — like a mother who had a baby inside, or if someone hurts their parents, or if a servant was hurt. The halachos of what needs to be paid can be different for each kind of person.

Perek Hey teaches us that it is asur to even pick up your hand against another Yid. Someone who does is called a rasha, even if he didn’t hurt him! But even though it is such a serious aveira to hurt another person, a person who was hurt should be mochel the person who hurt him if he asks for forgiveness.

Perek Vov starts the halachos about damaging someone else’s THINGS (not about hurting the person, like we were learning before).

This perek has the halachos of how and when tumah spreads through a window in a roof, like a skylight.

Ahavas Yisroel

Sometimes we look around us
At the people we’re nearby.
We see that they’re not acting right
We shake our heads and sigh.

“She shouldn’t have done that!”
“He should have just said yes.”
“That’s not how we talk to parents!”
“That’s not how we treat a guest!”

“That shirt isn’t tznius’dik.”
“He shouldn’t read that book.”
There’s lots of people acting wrong
Everywhere we look!

The Baal Shem Tov teaches us
That really we should know
The world is a big mirror
Everywhere we go!

It’s hard to know what we do wrong
So Hashem helps us each day
By showing us other people
That we’ll notice right away.

When we see they’re not acting right
Or not speaking how they should
We’ll know what WE’RE not doing right,
What WE’RE not doing good!

When we see someone being chutzpah’dik
And know it’s not the Torah way
We’ll know to be more careful
About the things WE say!

When we notice that her sleeves are short
Or that her hair’s a mess
We’ll know to be more careful
About the way WE dress.

So when we see people not acting right
Or saying things they shouldn’t have said
We’ll thank Hashem for the mirror
And fix up OURSELVES instead!

TEFILLAH

Bareich Aleinu

In Shemoneh Esrei, the bracha that we say to ask Hashem for parnasa is “Bareich Aleinu.”

(If you look at the translation of this bracha, you will see that it is all about rain and growing things. That’s because it used to be that everyone’s parnasa was connected to farming.)

It says in Hayom Yom that when we ask Hashem to bring bracha on all that we grow, we should have in mind the matzah for Pesach, the esrog for Sukkos, and the wine for Kiddush. When the wheat, esrogim, and grapes grow well, we can do these mitzvos in the nicest way. When the reason we ask for parnasa is to do mitzvos properly, Hashem will surely bentch us with plenty of parnasa.

HALACHOS HATZRICHOS

Hocheiach Tochiach

We learn from the Baal Shem Tov that if we see something not good in someone else, Hashem is showing us what we need to fix up — like a mirror.

Still, if we notice that someone isn’t doing something right, we have a mitzvah to help them act the way Hashem wants them to. This is called the mitzvah of Hocheiach Tochiach Es Amisecha.

The Torah gives us many halachos about this mitzvah, to make sure we don’t do it in a way that will hurt the other person. That’s why the Torah first tells us “Lo Sisna Es Achicha Bilvavecha,” that we shouldn’t hate another Yid, and only then, once we have Ahavas Yisroel for them, can we help them become better Yidden.

We will IY”H start to learn some of the rules from Shulchan Aruch.

GEULAH U'MOSHIACH

Perfect

Do you ever feel like your life isn’t perfect?

That’s because we’re in Golus! In Golus, NOTHING is perfect. We will only have real shleimus, perfection, when Moshiach comes!

We say this in Musaf on Shabbos: We ask Hashem to rebuild the Beis Hamikdash, and we’ll be able to bring the korbanosKemitzvas Retzonecha,” like the mitzvos of Your Will.

We will only be able to do Hashem’s mitzvos perfectly, exactly the way Hashem wants, when Moshiach comes.

Still, we shouldn’t think that since it’s not going to be perfect until Moshiach comes, we shouldn’t bother trying now. A Yid needs to do whatever he is able to do, and Hashem will make it perfect when Moshiach comes!
